Wow, sounds interesting especially coming from a conservative area. I participated in many veg. fests in the Seattle Area. Part of the fests included non-vegetarian restaurants (especially a chain of Mexican) who were showing off their vegetarian dishes.
In our area the one big group broke into 2 groups. One wanted to include morals/politics and the other one just wanted to discuss foods sans extra issues.
