Looks like my weird diet paid off during a pandemic. So I went to do my weekly grocery shopping 1 hour ago. I was expecting there to be a shortage. I didn't need that much, so I wasn't worried about this week. Most of the produce, canned goods, bottled water, bread, meat, eggs, and frozen food aisles were almost completely empty. (All the toilet paper was gone but I didn't need any. I live by myself and bought a large-sized pack about 2-3 weeks ago, so I have plenty).
Well, guess what was left at the store? Pretty much everything I normally eat ( LOL ): unsweeted soy milk, almond-cashew milk, tofu, vegan cheese, dairy-free pizza, vegan burgers, there were plenty of bananas, and still in stock were canned mushrooms and diced tomatoes so I grabbed 1-2 cans of those. There was also a lot of crunchy peanut butter available (all the creamy pb except this 1 little jar in the back was gone); I normally buy crunchy pb for sandwiches, but I didn't need any. I did grab that little jar of creamy pb for my protein shakes. But its good to know there are plenty crunchy pb left if I need it. I just grabbed some tortillas from the Mexican aisle since all the bread was gone.
So, yeah, me being a vegan paid off at the grocery store for once. There were some foods (mostly vegetables) that I wanted to get but couldn't since there were none left. This was definitely a "win" for me considering the panic shopping I've heard about all last week.
My supermarket was out of bread. Just bread.. I bought tortillas too!
People have just not gotten (or simply don't want to) that all the serious pandemics (like Smallpox and flu are from our infatuation with meat. All these pathogens come from animals. [all-creatures.org]
I have also found that being vegan actually costs less than not. When I buy food for my daughter who isn't vegan, the grocery bill is much higher. I make most of my food from scratch so it is much less expensive than processed.
I didn’t have any issues either. I buy only organic fruits and vegetables and their were plenty of those left when I went shopping.
My wife made a delivery this morning. A woman in the next town was out of TP for herself and her daughter. We haven't been intentionally hoarding (at least for the virus) but we both grew up in ranch country and are very aware how quickly staples can run out if, say, you can't drive to town. So we generally keep a well stocked pantry.
A bit over a year ago my wife over ordered an online TP subscription so just now we have a couple of extra cases. Little did we know that our overage would be useful. My wife heard that a woman was in need and was able to help her through a (hopefully short) period. I suspect there will be lots of small chances for small favors if we keep looking. Lol.
