The first time my late partner returned to Iran (after some 9 years) the extended family killed a goat per tradition. She was seething and said she would not return unless they promised not to do that again. That created a real culture issue with them but they gave in. My best friends use another friend's property and have a labyrinth and a garden and started raising goats. The property owner, a vegetarian, agreed to let them breed the goats under the condition that if any males were born they could not slaughter it. One was born and they kept it alive (but castrated it - male goats are not very useful).
