Ayn Rand has come up in conversations with conservatives lately.

Not a student of hers, but I've heard enough of her ideas espoused to know I'm not a fan, especially since the conservatives have taken her up.

Interesting study about how our surroundings affect our emotional health. [nbcnews.com]
Tomfoolery33 comments on Aug 3, 2018:
Definitely. One of the reasons I'm in the house I'm in (after we had to sell our house in a nicer neighborhood) is because I'm right across the street from a well-kept cemetery, where I always walk my dogs. Lots of trees and greenery and birds. But they just put up signs saying "No dog walking in the cemetery." I am not happy, and neither are my dogs.

Interested in your thoughts on two different topics: 1) Karma 2) Soul-mates
Tomfoolery33 comments on Aug 2, 2018:
I used to believe in Karma, but I no longer do. Like god, any mysterious "force" has to be proven in a more rational way than anecdotally. As far as soul-mates, I understand what the term means, and I would say I have had two in my lifetime, but I don't believe there is a soul, and definitely not that there is only one true person for a soul-mate. If you're lucky, you'll meet someone who may grow into that status through shared love and experience.

Starting in puberty, my hair has always basically been uncontrollable. In the sixties I was so disappointed that I couldn't have that Beatles long straight hair look. I tried Dippity Do for a while to try to get some of the kink and curl out. Finally, I gave up and let it do what it wanted to do, and that's what I've done since. Men have it so much easier than women when it comes to the hair department.

How many of you have gone through a tornado or earthquake?
Tomfoolery33 comments on Jul 31, 2018:
I was in an earthquake while working on the computer system in a hospital in San Jose, CA in the 80s. I was in the Medical Records Dept. when it began, and everything started shaking. The cubicles were divided by glass, and were shaking and rattling, and I decided I'd better get under a desk before all the glass started breaking. Just as I was about to do so, it stopped, and the lights went out. The emergency power kicked on, which only powered certain critical areas. I was on the 3rd floor, and because all the elevators had stopped, I had to take the stairs down. I later talked to someone who had been outside, and they said the parking lot was rippling with waves during the quake. No one was hurt, but it was pretty intense. Living in California for 9 and a half years, I experienced quite a few, but that was the worst one I experienced directly.
I was hoping to post these two versions of a poem side by side, but didn't manage to do so.
Tomfoolery33 comments on Jul 31, 2018:
Excellent! Not having experienced it, I can only imagine. But it seems to me to be true. It takes something more than a wishy-washy positivity to get through something that tough.
