I don't agree with abortion, mostly on the grounds that it undermines a father's parental rights. In that regards, I can see a point in Lawrence Lockman's comments. Essentially I am against any violence to other beings, be they animals, children, women or men....but if women can murder, why can't men rape; it is a lot less violent and permanent than death. BTW...I am also against the death penalty.

It would be an interesting topic to broach with the professor, esp as a clinical psychologist dealing with delusions, schizophrenia, brain washing but why religions get a pass with these labels. Tactful timing and discussion will need to be taken. Funny, but its been my experience that some Catholic priests and scholars don't really seem to believe in God, or at least not the brand named one that is presented by their church.

Is socialism bad for the USA?
jondspen comments on Sep 16, 2018:
Citizens are what's really bad for the USA. Socialism, capitalism, communism all are 'tools' with pro/cons. It's how and to what extent they are implemented. Capitalism drives innovation and business efficiency, communism drives worker rights and efficient operations, socialism drives community safety and security. We also can see the negatives in these. Given our greed, laziness, apathy, and ignorance...we can't seem to make good, rational, achievable decisions to address many of the problems faced using the right tool for the job.

I then ask them do they know and have contacted their national, state, county, or local elected officials to voice concerns or opinions on current topics in the community. If they haven't, they obviously don't value my sacrifice, since voting in a popularity contest once every two years, then sitting on your ass for someone else to think for you isn't what democracy is about.

jondspen comments on Sep 15, 2018:
It's your life and decision, but my daughter had a JW wedding. I don't believe in their theology, but she does and I respect that. To me it was more important to be there for her on a very significant day in her life that was centered around her and her husband, instead of me forcing it to be centered around my beliefs. I would attend the event, after all it's just a building, and I don't see how your entrance through the door will negate or undermine your beliefs or integrity. It's not like it's being held in a Nazi themed auditorium or KKK seance. That's just my 2cents...

"...abstinence is discarded as the equivalent of racism" - don't know about that, just know that abstinence is not a practical solution. Most kids are sexually aware by the time they are 13, yet the human brain does not fully develop till around age 23. To expect kids to remain celibate for 10 years, the same 10 years where they are exponentially absorbing and understanding themselves and the world, is just foolish. It is these years where they grown into adulthood, and her solution is to just ignore that biological desire, providing no guidance or oversight. Sure...that makes perfect sense, if your a religious nut.

jondspen comments on Sep 12, 2018:
Wow....that's pretty harsh. I can understand your pain though. It's hard when you find that friends who you thought would be in your corner, aren't. I was adopted, and adopted guardians were neglectful and abusive. Perhaps not criminally, but definitely not to the point of ever being there when I needed them. Raised my 2 daughters, who stabbed me in the back while teens b/c mom's pasture seemed so greener. As you can imagine, I've got some trust and intimacy issues. What I learned, is that no one owe's you love and affection. You give love and support to people just b/c you want to, and don't expect it to be returned. I'm still trying to accept that, but some people are just selfish and insensitive to the needs and pain of others, and your love and kindness won't change that about them. I hope you can let go of the anger and resentment. You're pain isn't hurting her...just yourself. That's not to say I would buy the bitch a wedding present though, although I would have no qualms going to the reception (if invited) for some free cake! :) Maybe you'll meet a nice single guy there and have wedding party sex in the coat closet! Then you get to eat your cake and have it too! LOL~~~
Would you pay someone to date you?
jondspen comments on Sep 12, 2018:
In traditional USA, this is done on every first date, and typically the second, third, etc. Guys are expected to pay for the dinner...ergo, we always pay for someone to date us. There are a few women who will insist on going dutch, but in my experience and feedback from friends, that usually only happens when the woman decided that she doesn't want to date the guy and doesn't want any ties hanging over her (probably b/c of some asshole telling her she owed him something b/c he bought dinner and drinks). That is why I tell women that we are going dutch, b/c I don't know if you are worth my money yet. Also, if I was going to do something like this...I would just pay for the full GFE from a 'professional'. No muss, no fuss, and we both have an understanding on the agreement. BTW....who gives a shit about "conventionally attractive"I myself have walked away from dates from attractive women b/c I saw the ugly inside. I know we've had disagreements on another post, but I think your profile pic is attractive, and seem to be funny as hell. :) Don't sell yourself short, just b/c majority of these bitch ass momma's boys are cheap shit-heads! Get yourself a battery powered boyfriend to handle the physical needs till you can find a MAN that can TCB...both physically and emotionally!
People often talk about raising children with an open mind, letting them make their own decisions ...
jondspen comments on Sep 12, 2018:
I think a lot of people take it too extreme like you pointed out, but I believe the intent is to let our kids exercise thought and critical thinking. They can't learn to make their own decisions as an adult you made them all for them. Would you let your kids read books on capitalism, communism, marxism? Would you let your kids read about racism, both sides of the argument? I might not agree with racism, but unless I understand what and why a person is that way, I can't form an argument against their beliefs. Exposing them to new ideas is what I think the intent is...but honestly, I don't think there is any parent that will REALLY allow their kid to go 180 against something they firmly believe in with no input or opinion expressed. Therefore, I disagree that ANY parent really lets their kids make up their own mind about stuff. They will sit down with the kid and debunk their ideas and beliefs, or at the minimum propose arguments against, not sit back and let them sort it out without any guidance.

Why to call yourself "Atheist" instead of "Agnostic."
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
A simple definition of the two boils down to what do you believe and what do you know. Not sure the accuracy of the definition, but my take is atheist means I don't believe in gods, agnostic means that I don't know if there are gods (and perhaps due to my composition could never know). In reality, I have found most agnostics are afraid to take a stand and say they don't believe in gods. They are a bit wishy-washy with the whole "Well, I just don't know, so I can't make a decision." Not saying all are like this, just the limited one's I have encountered and spoken too. I am agnostic when it comes to unicorns and leprechaun , in that yes, I don't know of any that exist, nor do I know if I will ever be able to know if they exist. Yet I have the courage to take that knowledge and form some assumptions that since I don't know of any, I infer (believe) they do not exist. Could I be wrong...absolutely. I am not so arrogant to think I have all the answers, but I am also no a coward to kowtow to public opinion and delusions by trying to stay on the fence with an "I don't know therefor I can't believe either way" excuse. Honestly, I don't think it's typically enough of a difference of perspective to affect public policy, laws, and societal constructs in the majority of instances. Given that, I don't put too much effort into dissecting the nuances of the two.
So what is the main reason most of you are on here?
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
I think I found this as a dating site, but to me it's more of a atheist/agnostic community. I initially signed up hoping to find women close by that might be a match date-wise, but now have given up on that and actually more pleased with the conversations I have found. There are some bone heads on here, so I've learned that freedom from religious b.s. doesn't mean you are intelligent or insightful, but overall, there are a LOT of good people on here. I am honored to be here and being challenged in my views. Thanks to all for helping me to be a better person! Although, not sure that was a high bar to start with! LOL :)
I left my abuser over two months ago but I am still struggling and very unhappy.
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
Good for you to move on and have the courage to make a change in your life. I know you are sad, alone, struggling to adjust to so many things, but here are a few things that might help you. 1. Not sure your age, but I am assuming the abusive relationship went on for some time. Lot's of habits and emotional programming to undo. It probably didn't happen in 2 months, so understand the healing process won't happen in 2 months. Hell, if you cut your hand, it takes just seconds to make the wound, weeks to heal. You're mind and emotions are even slower to heal from wounds. 2. You are moving into new areas of your life. It is very easy to fall back into old habits and routines. I would guard against relationship now, until you can see and stop users and abusers. Like above, you have a history and tendency of allowing and accepting abuse. I don't judge you, and I know you don't want that kind of relationship, but it is a part of you that you have to accept, as well as come to understand why if you are going to eventually change. The abuser did the abuse, and that was wrong, but eventually you need to confront your demons on why you allowed it to happen. If you don't, there is a good chance that you will fall back in with the same type of person, since abusive people need people who they can abuse. You need to be the one to shut that door so more of them don't come into your life. It's going to be hard. Probably the hardest part of the journey for any person in any situation is learning to love and forgive ourselves for letting ourself down. 3. The two things above are VERY BIG things to accept and change, so when you get discouraged remember that they are very tall mountains to climb. To get to the top, will take time, and you may have to stop and take a break to get there, but as long as you don't give up, they can be conquered. 4. I would suggest the therapist, but also set some goals for yourself. Are there any hobbies you enjoy? Is there anything you always wanted to learn but haven't (playing music, learning a new language, gardening, etc). I would find things that you can do that will give you some happiness, or at least put your mind into neutral (and out of sadness or depression). It will help you emotionally, as well as give you small goals you can see progress with in the short term - thus giving you hope and encouragement on the 'smaller' stuff you can then apply toward bigger and harder goals. I am really happy and encouraged that you have taken the steps you have so far. Just what you have done thus far is an incredible feat of strength and resolve. Face your past, but don't let it define your future, and above all, look for the happiness in the present. It may be hard to see it through all the tears right ...

Shit doesn't work out, at first but did later, it isn't b/c some imaginary friend deemed it, it's b/c you got off you ass and went to plan b, c, d, ....etc. It's all relative to your point of view on how you interpret events.
Do you use religious terms sprinkled throughout our language?
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
I use most of them that you mentioned, and at one time was upset with myself for hanging on to them. After a while though, I realized that they are just words, and not literal. I might also say Kiss my ass, Go fuck yourself, stupid bitch/dickhead/asshole, etc. They are just expressions I was raised with which express emotions or meaning. Granted, I may used expletives more often than I should, but I don't think I'm promoting religion by saying such things.
So after reading some comments on an FB post, I became very curious.

MEN: What would your reason be for asking a woman what she does for a living, upon meeting her?
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
I think it is a central part of finding out about the person. I think I saw a study that said over 80% of people are unhappy in their job....so the following shouldn't be taken as "I see you as a sell out", but if I was to ask (1) it tells me if you are happy with what you do for 1/3 of your day and (2) it gives me an idea if you are not, what dreams you have given up on just to fit in and make ends meet. You typically spend 1/3 of your day at your job, 1/3 of your day sleeping, and 1/3 of your day dealing with life and trying to squeeze in some enjoyment. I don't necessarily judge a person if they are working at a job they hate, I've done that myself like most people, esp single parents, but it also tells me the what and why you are doing it. So yea...I think your job is a big part of who you are b/c it is so much a part of your life.
Sooo, here’s a question.
jondspen comments on Sep 10, 2018:
Dump her. I am making some assumptions here. It sounds like this is a fairly new relationship. What I don't know is if this was a first date, but she saw your facial hair and made the decision to go out on a date and use you for a free meal...either this time or times before. Regardless, the audacity for her to dictate what you do with your body is outrageous....at any point in a relationship (also hypocritical). If she's that shallow, you need to take a good hard look at what the relationship dynamics would be later on. How much is she going to expect you to just give up for the 'honor' of her pussy? What if you put on some weight? What if you start loosing the rest of your hair? I can understand compromise in a relationship, but this sounds like feminine castration games. Hair on your chin is a pretty shallow gauge of determining if this person has character, honestly, loyalty, compassion, and a host of other traits that should be the focus on whether you want to be in a relationship with a person. She doesn't want to kiss you with it, fine...she is free to make that decision. She should have stepped up and went dutch on the bill then and told you not interested instead of being a manipulative coward.

Welcome back! Hope your new job is going well and is something you like. As far as your insights, while I will agree we all have issues that we are dealing with, I would disagree about us all being addicts. That is too much 'Christian' thinking IMO, in that we are all horrid, fallen, deviants that need to be reigned in and taught a lesson. Addiction is "strongly inclined or compelled to do, use, or indulge in something repeatedly" per https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/addicted. While we can easily become addicted to many things, not just drugs (alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, internet), I think assuming EVERYONE is addicted to SOMETHING is incorrect. I also believe western culture promotes a more addictive lifestyle, in that we are accustomed to comfort and easy fixes for problems/desires. Maybe from a USA perspective, 99.999% are addicts, but that is not 100%. My 2 cents on that. I will agree we all have mental health issues once we reach a cognitive threshold of understanding ourself, others, and the world. I would argue that a newborn does not have mental health issues, but any thinking, reasoning child or adult has probably experienced fear, pain, or depression. In that sense they are not "mentally whole" and at least have scars on their mental health.

Sounds like you didn't physically cheat, and was seeking someone to connect with emotionally? So her answer to the problem is kick you out of your bed and be more emotionally distant? What steps is she taking to work on her failures as a wife that made you feel you had to seek closeness to someone outside of your marriage? BTW...if the the affair was with a he, would you call it an emotional affair, or just a good friendship you were close too and trusted? I don't mind if they join b/c they (1) have questions about their faith - perhaps they are almost about to get a clue or (2) they come here to have discussions in a respectful manner. If they come here to flame the boards, kick them - they would do the same to us if we went to a religious site and started spewing hateful things to them.
How comfortable are you with the word "Atheist" ?
jondspen comments on Sep 1, 2018:
Good point. It's like calling tea - unsweet tea. A comic made the joke that you can't unsweeten something. Why don't we call it un-lemon tea, un-iced tea, un-arsenic tea?
How do you tell religious people that you're an atheist?
jondspen comments on Sep 1, 2018:
Depends on the interaction. If they are pushing beliefs on me, then yea, I step up. If they make some offhand comment about "God made such a beautiful day today", I will agree it's a nice day, but won't cause drama over it. Depends on how pushy they are with their delusion.

How old were you when you came to disbelieve?
jondspen comments on Sep 1, 2018:
First glimmer of disbelief came at about 10 or 12, but didn't give denial or belief much attention either way. Parents went, so I had to go, and girl I had a crush on went to church with me, that's where my focus was. Teen years more interested in sex, drugs, rock n roll. After Marine Corps, was back in school, raising 2 daughters after divorce, taking care of mom with MS and recovering from heart attack. Needless to say I was overwhelmed. Started back b/c always told God handles your problems that you can't...so figured I was being prideful (see how they get you in with guilt and lowering your self esteem)? After being back in, really trying to live the life, finally accepted it was a load of crap and no amount of praying or faith would fix my problems. Was in late 30's when I finally stepped away for good. And no, don't believe any of it.
I received a message today from the CEO of a Christian youth program nonprofit.

Those 35 percent won't realize anything, b/c they are too stupid or too stubborn to admit they are wrong. Maybe when they lose their jobs, and prices go through the roof, they might wake up then. I would say non-religious brotherhoods are more meaningful. In church, all I ever got was a pat on the back and a "I'll pray for you". Any surprise? We have the worse economic melt down since the Great Depression b/c of corporate greed, and Americans thought the solution was to elect a trust-fund BUSINESSMAN. I mean after all, all our problems stem from the poor and illegals. All that's needed is a wall and problems solved. We can boot the illegals, then throw our poor and homeless over it too! I swear, I think all of America has ADHD.

Was life in the 1980`s simpler? [youtu.be]
jondspen comments on Aug 29, 2018:
Yes....in that we didn't have the internet or social media. We had moved from written news, to radio, then to TV...and while it did change things, the format and input feed wasn't as overwhelming as it is today. It's a lot easier to fact check, but now we are aware of so much more, that checking facts on everything we're told is near impossible. I believe being inundated with so much data is forcing us as a species to evolve. There is no way our old analog brain can receive, process, evaluate, and act upon all the digital information we are receiving today. In that way it was simpler. Survival was always hard, for many of the reasons other have mentioned, but now you have to work more, for essentially less (TY - Federal Reserve), and also process so much data being thrown at you. It's no wonder so many turn their brains off; they can't deal with it.
Another question for the group.

Though about asking him directly, since we don't know the specif dynamic of the relationship? 3 weeks isn't long, but how close the relationship is makes a big difference. But since we can't get that...here are some thoughts from a complete random stranger that literally doesn't know what he's talking about... (1) Women go for bad boys, so nice guys gotta do borderline a-hole stuff like this to keep woman's attention. (2) He spent money on you for flowers. Granted, IMO kinda tacky...but oh well. And of course it wasn't good enough. (3) Implying you can't keep plants alive 3 weeks in is kinda rude, but if you guys ARE REALLY CLOSE ALREADY (hint hint) then not crossing boundaries IMO. If not, then kinda a little too familiar, at least in my view after only 3 weeks, but that's just me. Everyone has their own sense of humor and boundaries. (4) Would you have been happier to not have received them? Seems like it... (5) Sit him down and give him a list of approved gestures, so next time he spends money on you letting you know he's thinking about you, he doesn't mess it up. And women wonder why there are no good guys left. That b/c all the good ones are tired of trying to do something good, and being made to feel like it's not good enough. I'm not MGTOW...but I definitely understand the movement.

Jewish scholars have pretty much agreed that the exodus story didn't happen. So doesn't that undermine their divine claim to the land? Also, you are considered a second class citizen unless you prescribe to their state sanctioned religion. Based on these two, I do not support this country or it's "right to exist". Holocaust was horrible, but I don't see us creating a nation-states for gypsys, handicap, or any of the other groups that were targeted. I will say that if the land grab and genocide stopped, and all citizens of the nation were see as equal in the eyes of the government (essentially remove the whole religion aspect and influence), I would be more supportive.

He ran under the Republican ticket, and they have been told Republicans are the Christian party. I would say a very large majority of people who vote don't bother to look at the candidates, their proposed platforms, or their history of prior government service. Thinking is too hard, so much easier to be naive and vote as your told. After all, God is in control, so no need for me to spend the energy trying to make things better.
A pastor told me today that he is sorry that I have not felt the love of god.
jondspen comments on Aug 27, 2018:
According to Christianity, the Holy Spirit is the one who leads you to God. So if you haven't felt the love of God, it stands to reason that God the Third (holy spook) wasn't sent to make you aware of it. It also stands that in that case, God the First (Pappy G) didn't send #3 (Holy Casper) so you can have a necrophilia relationship with God, Part Deux (Jesus), and is therefore sending you to hell b/c he wants you there. Critical Thinking - just another of Satan's evil ploys to steal your soul!!!

Nope...I have nothing to do with my dad anymore. I was adopted and it has more to do with him being a selfish a-hole who has never considered me his son...but being told I am cursed by god b/c I'm a bastard didn't help either. Oh, and being kicked off his dinner table b/c I wouldn't hold hands and pray with them, forgot about that one. Oh, and I have a masters in computer engineering, he barely graduated high school...but even though I can stand toe to toe on him quoting scripture, I'm just confused. Regardless if he is or isn't blood, I don't see the benefit in maintaining a relationship with someone that doesn't love you and accept you for who you are. I can understand you wanting to keep your relationship with them, but then again, shouldn't they also not want to do anything to jeopardize the precious time they have left with you? It's your relationship, and only you know the full dynamics of it...so take anything I or anyone else says with a grain of salt. Only you can determine what is right and acceptable in your relationships.

jondspen comments on Aug 27, 2018:
No - I have acceptance in the sense of "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink" regarding discussions with some religious people, but I have never believed "plenty of good also comes from religion". Good, kind, caring people are that way regardless of religion. Hateful, malicious, selfish people are the same. Religion is just the clothes worn over the person, and most often twists people into doing evil things in the name of good.

If you're in an area that has a large non-religious population, you can more easily find local friends to hang out and engage with.

jondspen comments on Aug 27, 2018:
I agree that we need a culture shift, b/c gun legislation isn't going to do it. We share nearly 2000 mile border with Mexico where guns are legal, and huge coastal areas on the east and west coast. Prohibition in the 1920s just empowered criminals and gave rise to the mafia. The War On Drugs in the 1980s just gave mid/south american cartels vast amounts of money and power. A prohibition on guns won't help much IMHO. From what I can tell, most of the proposed gun legislation wouldn't have made a difference in most of these shootings anyway. We have a serious mental health problem in the USA. People are depressed, suicidal, violent, tribal, and alone. We praise individuality and the entrepreneur, yet have millions with full time jobs that live below the poverty level b/c businesses can't pay a livable wage. We have a government mandated education-camp system that is falling behind the rest of industrialized nations, and is nothing more than a place for kids to get bullied (a.k.a, prision-lite). But hey, we have the biggest military in the world so we can maintain $2 gas! Go America!!!!
Just wondering, how many feel like I do.
