"What's dangerous is not to evolve." - Jeff Bezos
zeuser comments on Sep 20, 2020:
That's the wrong word. People do not evolve. Species evolve. People can change. They can change for the better, then reproduce, and if the way they change is beneficial to the survival of their offspring, those traits are passed on. Other traits that do not enhance survival do not pass forward. That is evolution. Bezos is talking about business, not people. That is a different thing entirely.

zeuser comments on Sep 17, 2020:
Capitalism is just an economic concept that has been popularly expanded to include a lot of other ideological by-products. Economics is the study of the production and distribution of resources. Capitalism suggests that land, labor and capital are the components of one system to do this, coupled with entrepreneurial motivation. By itself, it doesn't enable any nasty behavior or guarantee any ultimate benefit, that is the role of society and, more broadly, civilization. Economic phenomena do not exist in a vacuum, other factors also act to either inspire or inhibit any particular motivations, and nasty vs. beneficial is, ultimately, a value judgment.

zeuser comments on Sep 17, 2020:
All of this is possible, but these speculative scenarios take place in a vacuum devoid of the effects his followers will exert via violence and intimidation. That, IMO, is Trump's ace in the hole - his ability to inspire his dispirited well-armed base to acts of insurrection and civil rebellion. And all of this may occur before the next administration even takes office, between what I think will be an electoral defeat and the actual transfer of power. However, the general non-mouth breathing public has an ace or two up its sleeve as well - the insurrection's incompetence and lack of coherent leadership. The potential rebels do not answer to a single unambiguous command structure, and are thus subject to disorganization and infighting. That, however, would be enough to disrupt a lot of our institutions, and may be augmented by a motivated and competent foreign intervention. It's all guesswork until things happen. I hope I see this jerkwad behind bars, I really do. It won't be easy.
