Not having been on a real date in a very long time, I was thinking of inviting someone.
zeuser comments on Feb 10, 2020:
It's not just in Ireland. Wiki notes a number of different traditions that vary by region. "There is a popular tradition known as Bachelor's Day in some countries allowing a woman to propose marriage to a man on February 29.[24] If the man refuses, he then is obliged to give the woman money[25] or buy her a dress. In upper-class societies in Europe, if the man refuses marriage, he then must purchase 12 pairs of gloves for the woman, suggesting that the gloves are to hide the woman's embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. In Ireland, the tradition is supposed to originate from a deal that Saint Bridget struck with Saint Patrick.[26][27] In the town of Aurora, Illinois, single women are deputized and may arrest single men, subject to a four-dollar fine, every February 29.[28][29] In Greece, it is considered unlucky to marry on a leap day.[30]" It's me again. St. Bridget is widely believed to be based on Birgid, queen of the Druid Tuatha da Danaan, and the original Birgid would have nothing to do with St. Patrick who perpetrated a pogrom killing most if not all of the Druids in Ireland.

zeuser comments on Feb 7, 2020:
A view of bible belt politics from the inside... Here in North Kackalacky, our republican "senator" Thom Tillis is quite vulnerable. So the Koch brothers made a 1.5 miliion dollar ad buy. No not for Tillis. For Dark horse candidate Erica Smith, a Democrat running against Cal Cunningham. Why? Cal has been raising a LOT more money than Tillis and looks to do quite well in head to head polling. The Koch brothers want to split the vote and potentially give Tillis a weaker opponent to face in the general election. And the evangelicals all LOVE Tillis. We don't need to involve Russia in election interference here. We got the Koch boys dicking with us.

There is a difference between professing religious beliefs and having a religious agenda. President Carter, for example, was openly religious, but his policies were informed by his morality, not his religion's dogma. I voted for him twice and I'd do it again if I could. Politicians who use their dogma to, for example, discriminate against the LGBTQ community will never get my vote.

Mitt is not really a hero, just a politician. Utah in general, and the mormoms in particular, aren't all that crazy about Trumpism, having been ghettoized, persecuted, and forced to relocate themselves. Plus don't forget he's got a personal axe or two to grind with the nitwit in chief. I give him props for defying the rest of his bigoted party. That takes stones and a certain degree of integrity. But there WAS something in it for him.

zeuser comments on Feb 5, 2020:
There's nothing new under the sun. The current nihilism of the republican party is based on the desire to openly discriminate against any group they consider to be inferior, in this case immigrants, Mexicans, blacks, women, muslims, and I could keep going. But the key element is anti-immigrant policy. This is the same warmed over horseshit that was part and parcel to the nativist Know-nothing party which reached its high point in the 1850's. Most of the vitriol back then was aimed at catholics (i.e. - non-protestant immigrants) and keeping them out of public office and private sector jobs. They really had no formal opinion of blacks, but they were pretty much ok with slavery. They took the cultism a bit further by refusing to answer any questions about their beliefs or membership, and when asked would say they know nothing about it, which is where they got their name. Lincoln's republicans ran them out of politics, and then the south soon decided to secede and go to war with the north. History can teach us a lot.

At this stage of his reign, he'd never get close enough to a journalist with the wits and integrity to even hint at any of these questions, so it's a good concept but a moot point. Still, I'd enjoy seeing it play out if even one of these questions made it past his goons and he had to struggle for a coherent sentence while being prodded by a talented interviewer.
