So the bible was written by a team of guys who were influenced by a lot of misinformation...my question...in the 20th century....and this book was written a long time ago...why has it not been upgraded by people now who live in this century and have to take all the information they know now including everything that makes us mortals, mortal which includes same sex marriage and loving each other no matter what...or am I wrong

Those who take the bible literally are people who believe it was dictated by an infallible god. Upgrading and correcting it would indicate that their god isn't perfect. Some of them really believe that when facts don't agree with their book of holy shit, the facts constitute an attack on their faith.

BUT, it has/was upgraded by hundreds of early christians and scribes for it's first 1,000 years and then KJ had his edition written. There are so many changes that the original is so far from what we have now. From just mistakes in translation to changes because the scribe did not like what he saw in the "original" It has been said that there as many changes in the bible as there are words in the bible.

@starwatcher-al Agreat author on that very subject is Bart D Ehrnan. One of his best books is just how much and what has been added and changed from the Greek texts to the King James version. The book is called 'Forged".
He has many others.
He teaches the new testament at Chapple Hill.
Ironicaly he himself is an agnostic.

@starwatcher-al excellent point, but I know there are some people who believe that either the KJV was a precise translation of the original or even more hilariously that the book was originally a coherent manuscript written in middle English.

@TristanNuvo I enjoyed watching his videos. I'll have to find that book.

@JimG He was an inspration yo me in understang the new testament texts. Here is a link to one of his pod casts.

Because if it were udated for today it would be obvious it was the work of men and not the Divine. Gotta keep up appearances, ya know?

Have you ever read the bible page by page front to back. I did when I was 13 and decided that I didn't want to be an alter boy anymore. I think those guys were doing really good acid or mushrooms. Most bible thumpers have never really read it, but like to quote what they have been selectively told to remember.

One of the big selling points is that God's word never changes. If they revised the Bible, that would admit that his word changes.

The Book of Twump will be the next addition.

Make that the Twitters of Twump.

“And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Rev. 22:18–19.)

“Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” (Deut. 4:2.)

3

Because it specifically states, several times, that changing it or altering it earns you all of gawd's wrath

3

Because the people intelligent enough to update it for accuracy would begin pulling out the obviously untrue parts and be left with nothing to revise. You’ve just gotta start writing a different book, from a premise of truth. Scientists and philosophers do it all the time. Give em a read, some of it is politically motivated nonsense too and some is pretty good. But you can’t polish a turd.

You could strive for a more faithful translation of the Bible and there’s been many attempts at that too; I’m sure there are some scholarly translations that are more true to what the original Hebrew and Greek meant but its still gonna have the same proportion of flowery pretty advice on virtue in some part and heinous acts against humanity and impossible bullshit in others, so the benefits of getting close to the source are dubious.

There’s also some of the most well educated Hebrew scholars of the text that are convinced Christianity started as a psychedelic mushroom cult and the original texts were veiled instructions on shamanic practices. So maybe you’d be better off reading some Timothy Leary. Life is just too diverse and messy and fantastically interesting to ever live by only one book. It might be nice if it were that simple but Skeptics have no need or want for a single guidebook. Give us all the books, and all the first hand experiences we can get our minds and hands on and let’s talk about as many of em as we can, one by one. PS this is the 21st century. It’s always one ahead of the hundreds number in our year, because the 1st century was year 0-99. 2nd started in 100, etc

But you can polish a turd.

(I'm not trying to be an asshole; it just comes naturally! ?)

@Nottheonlyone lmao that’s fascinating I’ll be watching. So correction, I guess what I mean is, you can but who wants to own the end result: a polished turd?

@Wurlitzer It's not something I'd put on the mantle, I just thought it was funny.

A coprolite is a petrified turd. I bet one of those would polish up real nice. 😂

Compiled from some incel monks Dungeons and Dragons game that ran between the 7th and 13th centuries. Look, they even got reason people saying all this weird shit about "mortals" and such.

3

The bible has been revised countless times, it's just harder to keep doing so when everyone can read now and continue telling people it's the infallible word... we just wanna change some parts.

3

Have you ever read a fiction book that was re-written? The Readers Digest did a re-do years back and it's unreadable.

3

The religious corporations won't allow it.
That's what all religions are now, corporations.

Throw in a large body of LLC's

At adheinz, whether you take the bible literally or not, if you use it as your handbook and identify as a Xtian, you are acknowledging jesus as christ, meaning he was crucified, dead, buried and resurrected, all of, which,IMO is mythology, especially the resurrection. Once dead, you are dead and rising from the dead is, lets face it, an impossibility.

So what is the utility of the bible, at all? and who cares if you believe it literally or not. To think of revising it is an exercise in lunacy. To what purpose? To align it with your own literal idea of how it ought to read?? Go read some Marvel Comics.

Evangelicals just modify the Bible through actions and oral tradition. My favorite crazy encounter with an Evangelical "updating" the Bible: The guy was so judgmental and bigoted - so I quoted his Book. "Jesus said, 'Judge not lest ye be judged.' What's up with all the judgments you make about people, the color of their skin, their belief or non-belief? Didn't you hear what He said?"

His reply? "What He meant is that Christians have the right to judge." That explains a lot right? That's why it's okay for the 45th President to grab women by their genitals, shrug while our country is attacked by a foreign power, put children in cages, endorse Nazis (even when they are responsible for the death of a young woman), commit adultery repeatedly, openly slobber over his daughter being "hot" - 45 is a "Christian" - so he has the divine right to change the rules of Christian morality.

They update the Book alright - but like 45, they just don't bother to write it down. That's how we're going to get a Supreme Court judge who also makes it up as he goes along.

Rant ends...

2

If you did that then most of it would be removed as bullshit. Also it is supposed to be the word of Dog or something.

It belongs in the Fantasy section.

2

If they really updated it, they'd realize that it's nothing more than a collection of myths that really doesn't amount to a whole lot in our modern society.

2

Where do you think all those different versions of the bible come from? It IS updated. But they can't risk changing much without undermining the apparent validity of xtianity.

2

You could say that it was added too recently but it wasn't globally accepted. The book of Mormon added some more to it, it was just a few select bought into it.

2

It bugs the shit out of me that there are so many stupid believers that will say so much shit in the name of their deity and try to convince you to follow them that there is no backup for their nonsense...there either is or isn't....and that's when you lose your head because you don't love your chosen deity

1

Written by a bunch of people, to call them a team might be a stretch. You can't update it, it is what it is. It would be like updating the Bros Grimm, you could give it a modern twist but you'd have to work on the original premise which in the bibles case is made up stories and/or complete bollocks. If you update the the bible it becomes modern rubbish as opposed to old rubbish.

1

To those of faith, the bible is the literal word of god and when asked how that could be true, when told it was written by people, you usually get "inspired by god", which, to them, still means it is the word of god. In other words, no matter what you say. No matter what evidence is presented, belief that the bible is the word of god is unassailable, so how do you upgrade the long accepted word?

Actually, many Xtians do not take the bible literally. The problem is that the ones who do are very loud and irritating, and discredit the others as a result.

1

The faithful do not acknowledge that the men who wrote the Bible actually contributing to it in any meaningful way. as far as they are concerned they were merely the puppets of the day it's he who use them as a pencil.

therefore to change the document in any way or to acknowledge it being written by a man is in defiance of the idea that is in the infallible word of God blah blah blah

1

Change makes the Tru Believers nervous!
