Have any of you ever taken a cruise ship to another country? Did you need to have a passport?

Whenever you leave your country you must carry your passport: "To pass the port" as in to go out of your country through the port / to enter the other country through the port.

What they said. But I'm coming in your suitcase 😀

heh - you probably would be a lot of fun to hang out with

@UrsiMajor Best cruise buddy ever 😉 I did take one cruise, from Athens around the Greek Islands. I remember them taking everybody's passports then giving them back at the end of the cruise, I had not ever heard of this happening before, and no one liked it. Though travel tip, if you are ever going to the Greek Islands, take the ferry from Athens not a cruise, you can then spend as much time as you like in one place.

@Sacha yeah my friend suggested Greece. I know most Europeans are bilingual - but I get upset when I can't read my co-workers AngularJS.

I can still read Spanish and understand it. Not as scary.

@UrsiMajor You can always download a translation app to your phone, such as google translate. Most of the tourist police and tourism people speak English in those places. Easy to ask.

@Sacha Crete alumni. From Chania to Malia.

Yes, you absolutely need your passport.

Yes, you do need a passport...
I hope you have a great cruise !!!
I think if I ever do another cruise, it will be a Maine Windjammer Cruise.. not as luxurious, but it sure looks like fun ..

I did a week windjammer cruise on the 100' schooner Roseway many years ago around Penobscot Bay out of Camden, ME. It was fantastic, unforgetable and I highly recommend you take one if you get the chance.

@jlynn37 We used to try to sail from St, Croix to St. Thomas... I think each trip involved a call to the Coast Guard, most of us seas sick, and a grandfather bouncing a boat off of a reef after some rum 'n cokes. I might need multiple restaurants, a spa, some bars, and a pool. Maybe a singing Elvis imposter. who knows?

@UrsiMajor I think that these windjammer cruises stay closer to shore, and sort of puddle jumps, stopping for things like a lobster cookout on the beach, fire works displays etc. Not so much the rough open sea stuff. 🙂
They say a very high % of their business is repeat customers , which is interesting..

Yes and yes

I took a cruise to the Bahamas and I didn't need a passport, but I know you do in some of the Bahama islands, I think you do in st. martin but not in Nassau or in St. Thomas. Took my son for his 18th birthday and Christmas (12/21)And had a blast!

Yeah that makes sense. ST. Thomas is United States Virgin Islands.... Think St. Martin is British or French..

@UrsiMajor I think it's Dutch. I went there in 2005 and could get on any of the islands with a birth certificate, but I know that's changed now.

st thomas and st croix are american virgin islands. US territories.

Americans generally do need passports for international cruises unless it's a dual-citizenship situation and they will not be passing through the waters of a country where they do not have citizenship. There are some countries where citizens don't have to have a passport to travel back and forth between certain other countries, though.

Passport card is valid for land and sea border crossings between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. [travel.state.gov]

For any other countries (as well as any international air travel) you need a passport book.

yeah I'd need the passport book for Cuba

@UrsiMajor I got a good friend of mine and a trustworthy gentleman in your area that just did a cruise in 2017 to Havana, I can check with him his details... had a blast. I wrote a song "without a dance in havana". Only recorded the spanish version. The video will give you an honest introduction of what to expect in Havana.

Not on a closed loop cruise but it is strongly recommended in case you get left in port or have an emergency. Last year my daughter took me on a cruise to the western Caribbean and we did not yet have passports

On the second cruise we did which was fortunate since she had to fly home from Jamaica.

2

My next door neighbour does cruises. I can't see the point. Much prefer to visit places when they don't put the prices up.

Yes, get a passport. Then visit Europe and Africa. See things with your own eyes. The world is not how you think it is.

2

I took my kids, we all need our passports. Where are you thinking about going?

2

Never on a cruise..yes you need a passport..

2

I believe that they required one to get back out of the port in the states but did not to go to the other ports, but it has been a number of years sense I have been on one. Best to ask the cruise line or check the state department website

2

And definitely ask the Cruise line so you aren't surprised!

My sisters do a lot of cruising. One with a handicapped husband. So I've heard the tales.

2

Last time I went to Canada, I only had My ID and birth certificate. You should not NEED one to go to a US Territory, but with the state of our government, I am under the impression they changed the rules.

2

I took a cruise in 1999, and you did need your passport. Ohhh, where are you going?

Maybe Mexico and Cuba.. We'll see...

@LimitedLight Up until about 2004 you could go to Canada with a US driver's license and birth certificate. Technically Canada didn't change their rules, but the US said you'd need a passport to return the US (concerned about terrorists entering the US with easily faked documents), and obviously Canada doesn't want to let visitors in knowing that they'll have problems returning home.

2

Yeah, you need a passport to be in another country

2

Or a Visa. The Cruise company will give you details.... Go to www.travel.state.gov

2

by ship or by land you can get by with just a passport card, but by air you need the passport book. So you may as well get the book. $110 and a few weeks after sending the info. You may be able to do it on line, but still need an official photo. good luck.

yeah my passport expires in Nov... I want to go in May... I probably won't send it in ti after vacation..

@UrsiMajor Cuba always going to be tricky and a hassle. Specially with this administration. For "scholars" I think you need to be 50. You will find the island full of Europeans. It is easy for them to travel to Cuba.

1

Well, I didn't, but then I was in the Navy at the time, so is a cruiser considered a cruise ship?

It was for me.... shipmate.... 20 years. Best years of my life... funniest story may be waking up drunk in a Colombian Military truck... full of armed soldiers and I wake up saw the carbines and attempted to escape off the truck jumping into the highway despite the truck speeding they practically caught me in mid air and my buddy told me... No, chill, they are taking us to the pier in Cartagena. Navy was an adventure alright.

@GipsyOfNewSpain I woke up in foreign lands many a time not sure at first where I was. Not usually surrounded by armed folk, unless it was SP's!!

@phxbillcee Know that feeling.

You can go on a cruise without a passport, however you can't get off the boat to go into another country without one.

I would love to take a cruise someday. The one place I really want to visit is Pompeii! Afraid I will never be able to afford to go though.

Yes, and yes (the rules used to be that if you were departing & arriving back at the same port, and were only going to very specific locations, you could do it with government ID (aka:license) - but those rules ended quite some time ago.
Be aware: if you're looking at cruising you want to make sure you check to see if you'll need a Visa at the ports; if you don't have a Visa (which can take weeks, even months to get), you will NOT be allowed to leave the ship at those ports. I believe some ships will require showing that you have the Visas even before boarding.
If you have any questions, all the cruise lines have people who can walk you through the processes of what you will need & when (& sometime even letting you know how much things will cost).
As others have pointed out, there are cruises which stay in the same country they leave from; no passport would be needed for those cruises, BUT you'll still need your ID, just like at the airport.

If anyone wants to kidnap me and take me on a cruise, I already have my passport.

Are you serious ?
