Many good comments here. The one common thought seems to be; "Why do they get paid so much?". So, to look at that very valid question, I'd suggest seeing not only what they do, but how they do it, and what skills are needed to be successful. Then, looking at how that knowledge and skillset was developed over time. I worked closely with one CEO for around 4 years. It was enlightening. I won't comment on the salary ratio chart. I will say that I think a person who can be successful in the CEO position is a rare critter.
Doesn’t make sense but we live in a capitalist society where somehow the average American has become convinced that the wealth of our 1% is a reflection of our success.
But what are you going to do when your government leaders give themselves pay raises and lifetime retirement for only four years of work?
Disgraceful. No CEO is worth that much!
I'd argue that. But as I've only observed and worked closely with one.... my comments aren't any more valid than yours, Walt. But, how many CEOs have you worked with?
@bigpawbullets My work was in the e3ducational sector. There, we did not have CEOs who were paid far more than they were worth. We generally had quite competent and effective leaders who werde compensated adequately, but, by comparison, modestly.
@wordywalt
Aren't all faculty in public education paid by some government agency? I'm only familiar with how the system works here in Ohio. So, I'd say that the two systems aren't really comparable.
@bigpawbullets Your comment still does not justify the hugely exorbitant pay of business executives.
@wordywalt
No, it doesn't. And I wasn't defending or objecting to salary differences. I was simply stating that to understand why a CEO's salary is what it is.
