Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050

Maersk — the world's largest container shipping company — has an astonishing goal. By 2050, the company vows to send goods — everything from electronics to soybeans to sneakers — around the world with zero carbon emissions.

This caught my attention:

  1. A growing number of businesses are paying attention to the environmental damages by emissions
  2. Shareholders are demanding it
  3. The shipping industry contributes large emissions
  4. Danish Maersk operates 750 large ships, Some of the ships are as long as the Empire State Building is tall.
  5. Maersk has already invested $1 billion in cutting emissions down
  6. Its scientists have set a goal to switch to a different fuel when the technology to do it does NOT exist
  7. Maersk said that the fossil fuels will be amazing expensive and alternative and reusable fuels will be amazingly cheap by 2050 ! [npr.org]

I can see why Maersk would say this, but like trump why would they actually do it?

Some may look at this monstrosity and think of all the greenhouse gasses it emits. I look at the picture and think of all the environmental damage done through the production and consumption of the products on the ship.

I did hear the report and kept thinking the real problem is it is a symbol of the enormous consumption in the world that will and is doing us in. Problem is, when we are gone this crap will still be around.

I think they are being unrealistic. No way they can accomplish that. People who believe we can accomplish that are quite delusional.

When I was young , air pollution was a major problem , particularly in large cities , much due to automobile exhaust . A government agency (EPA , I think ) . developed a requirement , and had it made into law . The automobile manufacturers had to develop a means of reducing the pollution caused by automobile exhaust . And they DID ! Each car has a kind of filter , sounds like a metal tray full of cat litter to me , that is attached to the exhaust system . While I don't think those ships are going to go back to sails , per se' , I do think they can find a new means of non polluting ,power for them . People are reading a lot about trash accumulating both in the oceans , water ways , and even in landfills . The younger crowd complains about their lower than living wages , and yet are blowing large amounts of cash on things that didn't exist , when I was small . They will , in time , hopefully make the connection , and realize they don't need everything that is being offered for sale . After WWII , there was the baby boom .Today's average family , begins family life later in life , and on average have fewer children . The baby boomer generation is one of the biggest part of the population , As we die out , the number of people will be reduced . Thankfully , we have access to birth control , at least for the baby boomer generation . The government , needs to realize this , and ensure that reliable birth control remains accesible , to all fertile people .

Part of the answer may be wind power...a reprise of the venerable sailing ship. And part will probably be biofuels. It's nice that they are at least talking about zero carbon emissions, but 2050 is not soon enough to avoid catastrophic climate change. We have to get to net zero emissions by 2030.

>..a reprise of the venerable sailing ship.

One stuck in the doldrums. It's rare to find a modern sailing ship without a motor.

If everything is as what the knowledgeable people say it is, I would imagine that by 2050 it will too little, too late.

Good that will help

Do they say how they are going to cut to 0 carbon emissions. I think it is an amazing goal and if can be done then hopefully more will follow suit - well unless it cuts into their bottom line too deeply and then we can forget it.

The technology has not been invented yet they said. It was impressive to me how they are able to read into events and kind of intelligently guess the future.

@St-Sinner well let's hope!
