“There is really only one question you ever need to direct at someone to work out whether or not they are a good person – and that is, with deliberate simplicity: Do you think you are a good person?
And to this there is only one acceptable answer. People who are genuinely good, people who know about kindness, patience, forgiveness, compromise, apology and gentleness always, always answer no…”

I long ago abandoned the concepts of good and evil, since both are arbitrary concepts and completely subjective conclusions.
We don't get to determine if we're good or bad from our intent because the best of intentions can end in tragedy.
For example: Bush didn't judge himself which was convenient since it turned out he's a war criminal.
Trump has less self awareness than the average hammer.
This makes neither of them "evil" it just makes them toxic for the nation, but I still think they meant well.
I also wish for them terrible tragedy and eternal suffering, primarilly because I recognize that the Dunning Kruger is especially strong in them.
I thing I judge them harshly due to their obvious conservative incompetence.
I fear incompetence FAR more than evil.

Good on you for proselytising a monetised pay per lesson self-awareness business.

I have never been worried about whether i was a good person. Maybe I worried about this when I thought I had to please a god, but it is no longer the case.

Well, haven't eaten a liver with a nice Chianti yet...I Hate Chianti!

Ah, a nice meal of Lamb's fry (Lamb's liver) with diced bacon and an thick onion gravy, steamed vegies, steamed and mashed potatoes but hold the Chianti or any wine thanks.

I recently saw this on a blog somewhere:

"When the systems are evil good people need to abandon them instead of propping them up to continue the illusion of goodness that they appear to be."

This soundtrack is now triggering me. This creep sounds like a cover up merchant or else a Jim Spiegel "Little Hitler" type.

Now I get the cogs - that's the likes of me and they are the Big Wheel with their Roller Coaster to foist their melodrama on me with its Lemony Snicket style Series Of Unfortunate Events through their immoral blackmail.

Oh yes - subliminal black & white (thinking).

Good people are grey and don't make pointed remarks about me being grey. What are these goons up to with their "channel"?

This actually would be philosophy if the "correct" answer was "yes". Isn't living supposed to be about looking oneself in the eye instead of tripping oneself up for someone's (a tool themselves) diseased "glee" and warped ends.

Me thinks I smell the very familiar odours on religious self-righteousness exuding many-fold from the piece of completely undiluted religiotard bull droppings.
Plus the frequent usages of Halos and religious symbolisms gives one a sense of self-righteousness as well imo.
Maybe, just maybe, someone should remind the producer of that show of unmitigated self-righteousness of the biblical passage that states, " Judge ye not, lest ye too shall be judged."
Imo, being 'good' is as one does and as one thinks NOT as one believes.
I.e. ANYONE can be a good, decent and caring person when given the same during their up-bringing, No-one needs to believe in a Higher, Omnipotent, Magical Entity to be a good, decent and caring person all it takes is the will and fortitude to do so.

For me, the word "sin" kept appearing in there all too often. Yes, once is too often. Oh no, I've offended somebody's imaginary friend.

@PadraicM Welcome to Club my friend, no need to worry though I've been offending Big Loving Sky Daddy ( yes I'm being offensively sarcastic about 'Sky Daddy' btw) for decades and I'm still here, alive and kicking, NO mysterious, magical Lightning Bolts, etc, have smote me even when there have Lightning storms and I been walking around them.
So, 'Sky Daddy' couldn't hit a bull in the arse with Scud Missile while stand right behind me or as we all know he just don't exist.
And I'm putting my money 100% on the latter btw.

This was so off and bad that it was hilarious.

"Off," M8, Geez Louise, I've smelled better 'aromas' coming from 3 day old road-kills that have been laying in the sun and 40 degree Celsius heat.
Last summer I was helping a friend who's job entailed travelling a 160 kilometre round trip every 2nd day picking up 'roos that had been hit by cars and trucks along the highways, most of them smelled so rank that even the flies were wearing gas masks....LOL.

I agreed with everything put forth, except one thing, I don’t think that I would commit a ‘monstrous’act! No matter how flawed I might be, that would be ‘a bridge to far!’ (I think.) 😣

3

'good' is a relative term and I only have to compare my actions with some others out there, to know that I'm good. I agree I'm a work in progress who requires self-reflection but I do aim to be the best version of myself I can be. I fail at times but I'll brag that I'm really good at Sudoko

1

It does not matter what others may or not think of you!!!

You do not have to be religious to be moral or ethical!!!

Too too many confuse kindness and/or goodness as show of weakness!!!

8

I don't need a test to tell if I'm good. I treat people how I want to be treated.

4

Dogs, cats, turkey vultures, and squirrels like me. So, I must be okay!

It's one of those ideas that sounds 'intellectually pretty' and 'nice' - but, in reality, like so many such ideas, it's not really worth the breath it's spoken with.

Let me just make this point by way of a counter argument.

The video's 'conclusion' is that a 'good person' is someone who does not say they're a good person. In other words a good person is defined as a good person by the fact that they make a false statement about themselves.

So why would they make a false statement about themselves?

There really are only two possibilities:

ONE - they know the statement is false, but make it anyway. This means they are actively and deliberately lying - and sorry, actively and deliberately lying is not a sign of a good person. True, there may be many motivations for lying, including excessive modesty - but the bottom line is that if you know the statement is false, making it in that knowledge cannot be an indication of 'goodness'.

TWO - they do not know the statement is false, which means they are not an active liar - but does mean their own personal assessment of their own qualities does not match the 'truth' of their goodness. In this case all their statement tells you is that you can't trust their judgement.

Either way this individual's statement that they are 'not a good person' cannot be seen as evidence that they are.

As I say... 'intellectually pretty' and 'nice', but actually bullshit.

I think it goes to the ‘possibilities’ of what a person is capable of. When I heard that question, I had to halt my thinking and an uneasy feeling came up. I really don’t know for sure what each human is capable of...even as I think there is no way I would go mad and do the unthinkable. That doesn’t cover the daily actions, that sometimes hurts others, when I am setting limits for my own regard and safety. There is no halo over my head then! Lol

Wells said. It's one of those arguments that sound good on the surface, but not grounded in reality.

3

I do. I have seen so much ignorance in my family. I had to leave the church. So much wrong. I learned to be a good person by seeing wrong, and, feeling that it was wrong.....

3

The use of a halo is a good indication of what is to follow is false.

1

"Goodness" is on a continuum. I believe how good someone is directly relates to how high the threshold is for letting their innate selfishness dictate their actions.

1

why do you call Me good?

3

I think the video has a point about the need for humility in order to be a good person, but I think it's still a bit exaggerated and overly extreme. I think I can still be a good person and also rightly judge some people as evil and garbage wrapped in skin.
