I am ready for this summer to be over. It is the hottest summer we've had in the 24 years I have been in Missouri. The heat does not usually bother me, but the 90+ came early and has stayed.
The travails of the summer have gone from a bit amusing to very serious:
My son's dog sprained his tail using it as a rudder while swimming.
The next week, my five year old granddaughter sprained her ankle.
The week after that, my nine year old grandson broke his arm. It was not set correctly, and had to be broken again (he absolutely refused any pain meds during the procedure). It was still not healing correctly, so surgery was needed to insert pins.
Three days ago, my sister died after a very long fight (ten years) against cancer, heart disease, and Addison's disease. The doctor originally gave her two years, so she cheated death for ten years.
Yesterday, I was stung by a wasp. Although the sting took only a second, my arm is red and swollen a bit, but not nearly as bad as the other wasp sting I had.
And ya know, if Christians cling to the belief in god because it gives them comfort, then so be it. I just want them to stay out of politics, women's uteruses, and not try to turn the USA into a theocracy. My sister said if there is a god, then she had nothing to fear about dying; she also said if there is no god, she wouldn't know anyway.
Life goes on until it doesn't.
Sounds like you've had a gauntlet of crap recently. I hope things get better soon. I am told that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. That isn't true. it gives you some really dark coping skills, and PTSD. But I know all crap passes after a while. It is just hell while you're going through it.
This is the year I got old . My skin has turned crepy and the flesh on my arms is hanging down . I'm tired . My bones hurt . I'm afraid to take a bath on my own . It seems as if all the fun has gone out of my life .I'll be alone for the rest of my life .
Actually this sounds like thyroid or vitamin deficiency, "getting old" is Not a thing....get thee a checkup, STAT!
@Gwendolyn2018 I turn 79 this month .
Best of luck beating the heat. Condolences on the loss of your sister. Speedy recoveries to you, your grandson, and your dawg.
I wish I could tell you that the climate will be better next year, but that would be a lie.
I wish I could tell you your sister is in a better place, but you know that would be a lie too.
However, you and the kid and the dawg will have better days. That ain't no lie.
Peace!
@Gwendolyn2018 There other places besides California. Besides the high housing prices there is also drought, fires and heat. I have heard housing is becoming more of a buyers market so things might be changing in that direction.
I'm very sorry for your loss.
As well as all the other no-good stuff.
Hope you and everyone heal well.
Please be gentle with yourself.
Here if you need.
@Gwendolyn2018 You're absolutely right.
We've all been there, done that, burned the t-shirt.
This is one year you will not miss. I feel for you. You have had a cluster of what feels like bad luck.
My condolences on the loss of your sister. If/when you feel like talking about her, don't hesitate. I for one will always listen.
Take care of yourself. Hugs.
@Gwendolyn2018 We are here for you. You will never be alone.
You introduced several points beginning with climate change. Brings to mind this tragic bad-news/really-bad-news saying. Bad news is: This will likely be the warmest summer on record. Really bad news is: This will also likely be the coolest of future summers.
Most sorry for the loss of your sister.
I share your concern about the Christians converting our once greater nation into a dark theocracy where women are reduced to breeding cattle for (insert expletive here) males who by religious decree rule over them. This is a very real world realization of a Handmaid's Tale and the stated goal of Christian Dominionists. I both fear and hate the descension of our once secular government/society into the darkness of unsupported religious dogma and superstition that appears to be practicing misogyny towards the concept that unlike men, women should no longer have any right to decide the outcome of their own bodies. Better to force a pregnancy that may kill the mother then allow her a healthy recovery by removing unwanted and in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, cells that will likely dictate the death of the woman.
Sorry for the rant, hope your arm gets better soon.
I'm sorry about your troubles this summer, and most especially about your sister. Hang in there, and I hope next Summer you see better days.
I don't like heat either. But, it has been worse. In 1980 I was living in Kansas. That summer we had 30 consecutive days of 100+ temperatures, with he highs being 114. It was so bad that major highways were buckling, and asphalt side roads are actually melting. The whole state was full of prairie fires, too. I can remember arriving at the Wichita airport from a trip at 10 {M, and the temperature was still 105 degrees.
I jumped into Sugar Creek and hit my ass on the hard rock bottom. It hurt like hell, but I hope this makes you feel better
@Gwendolyn2018 No, I didn't get bruised. I Checked with a flashlight in the mirror. LOL
So sorry you are having such a rough summer, and especially sorry to hear about your sister. How wonderful though that you got so many extra unexpected years. And I'm quite impressed with your grandson's bravery and strong nature to refuse pain meds. I imagine that was an awful process. Best wishes that the worst is over for this summer, and you all have time to relax and heal.
I am so sorry that things are not going well for you. It is hot there, it is in the 70's here and without the breeze I would die, the humidity gets to me though it is not that high either.
@Gwendolyn2018 Thanks for the lesson.
Damn! Well, shit can change at any time. And one good thing about all those awful experiences: they're all in the past.
@Gwendolyn2018 I try to resist the feeling that events are connected. Multiple tragedies can feel like a trend, but that's how our simian brains try to protect us from ancient disasters. (I think)
@Gwendolyn2018 Yes, I understood that. I was just sharing my perspective.
Sorry about your sister but glad she got more time than they predicted.
I understand the wasp stings they hurt.
We are having a decent dry season here in the northern part of Oz. Our nighttime temps are in the single digits some nights (celcius) and during the day I am rarely putting on the fans until the afternoon. We have not had a dry like this for some years. I have even cracked out the doona and slippers.
My mum once had me with pulled muscles in both arms, my younger brother with a chipped bone in his elbow and my older brother with a fracture to a bone in his ankle. As we all sat in the lounge room wrapped up or in slings my mother would walk past and say "Life be in it be buggered!" (at the time there was an ad on TV to get out and be more physical with the slogan Life be in it. we all injured ourselves doing something physical outside) She was taking one of us to emergency/clincs every other day for a while there.
Hang in there your summer will end and then a cold winter will arrive.
