I remember when they added the words "under god" during the 1950's under a republican administration, obviously. I found this article interesting, especially the excerpt:
Excerpt: "All states except Nebraska, Hawaii, Vermont, and Wyoming require a regularly scheduled recitation of the pledge in public schools.[12] Many states give a variety of exemptions from reciting the pledge, such as California which requires a "patriotic exercise" every day, which would be satisfied by the Pledge, but it is not enforced.[13] The Supreme Court has ruled in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette that students cannot be compelled to recite the Pledge, nor can they be punished for not doing so.[14] In several states, state flag pledges of allegiance are required to be recited after the pledge to the American flag.[15]"
As a high school teacher I was expected to say the pledge every day. And every day, hand on heart, I skipped the words "under god." As the pledge was led by a student broadcasting over the intercom from the main office, I don't think anyone noticed my omission. But I desperately wanted to sue the District for imposing religion on me. I was just too busy to do anything about it. And it probably would have been futile anyway.
With or without the word god didn't you consider the hypocrisy of the "justice & liberty for all". Please see my reply to AnneWimsey below.
@FrayedBear Justice for all is an aspiration, a goal that we strive for. Is the system perfect? No, but at least we don't (yet) have a dictatorship like Russia's, where Vlad the Invader Putin jails and murders his political opponents and wins "re-election" in a landslide every time.
You apparently missed the tone and meaning of @annewimsey500's comment regarding the "commie menace." She was speaking tongue-in-cheek, lampooning the "red scare" and McCarthyism of the 1950s. But missing English language subtleties and ancient American cultural references is to be expected for a Russian operative, isn't it? Well don't beat yourself up over it, Russian Bear. Learning a foreign language is a lifelong process. Keep up the good work!
Oh, and by the way, do you think the list of Russian interventions and atrocities is not as long as your arm? If you're so worried about that sort of thing, you should tell your boss Vlad to quit his genocidal project in Ukraine. It's not a good look for mother Russia in the 21st century, never mind her chequered past.
@Flyingsaucesir how blind you are to the many assasinations by American politicians & citizens of their rivals to make your inane comment but then the old wisdom does say "that there are none so blind as those who do not want to see".
Note that I do not deny your comment regarding Russia apart from we all know that the Ukraine debacle is due to USA wanting a mercenaryvto fight a proxy war for it against Russia. The American intent is genocidal & creation of its #stupid hegemony.
@Flyingsaucesir as for any intent of Wimsey to lampoon or be sarcastic it is wholly inappropriate given the gravitas of the matter. The puerile would not understand and constantly being exposed to puerility as a teacher only results in the teacher becoming puerile. Sadly American hubris & desire for hegemony continue to reinforce the American trait of puerilty.
@FrayedBear zGood Going on learning some new words and using them repetitively in sentences...like noted above by Flying Saucer, learning a new language takes a lifetime of work!
@FrayedBear you know all the history below and yet do not know I was QUOTING Senator McCarthy?????? ( although making it "commie" vs. "communist" for added sarcasm.
Interesting, veeeerrrryyy interesting, proving that those who attempt to speak in their non-native language have a Much harder time with humor and sarcasm.......
@annewimsey500 what you call humour most do not.
@annewimsey500 Given the controversy of McCarthy supporting the Waffen SS responsible for the Malmedy massacre of Americans in WWII I wonder what his response to the Israeli Jews genocide ,torture & atrocities in Gaza would have been? More quotations from Mein Kampf like "that's the way to do it"? Funny hey? And I wonder if he would have applauded the US policy of duping Ukraine into fighting a proxy war for America using fascist mercenaries paid for by the American taxpayers like yourself? Sounds hilariously funny, not.
Still not getting it, are ya...not even a teensy bit........
throws hands in air and walks away
I remember having to relearn the Pledge of Allegiance we said every morning, standing with hands on hearts, as the entire cadence was thrown off.
And I remember how uneasy/unhappy many of the adults were about it being added, too.
Also I couldn't/can't help but notice it made no difference in quelling The Commie Menace.
When did the "Commie menace" invade or interfere in the smooth running of the USA?
Google tells me that it has no links since 2007
Whereas the question "when has america invaded or interfered in the affairs of foreign countries in the last 150 years" asked of the USA resulted in many responses the following only runs to 2005& so omits many more in the last 19 years:

.Seriously Anne you're projecting on a grand scale.
There is no word God in the American constitution. Only added on as amendments that every President vows to affirm.
Canada has the word God in their charter of human rights. I don't care, real human and nature's rights and laws allow me to refuse any of these ridiculous so called ultimate superior superstitious puppet master. . No one above me or below me.
FYI my reply to Wimsey above.
Try saying that to the immoral majority in SCOTUS!
See my reply to Wimsey
Sorry, did you mean "1792"? Like this what you said doesn't make sense.
'1892' is correct. But it was '1954', not 1854, when President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God".
@Ryo1 That was actually directly because of the charming influence of the House Un-American Committee led by the even more charming Senator Joe McCarthy and his delightful witch-hunting.
@Ryo1, thanks for the clarification. Now it makes perfect sense and ended up learning something about a piece of American history.
@Paddypereira The nutters added the “In god we trust” bs to currency later too.
@Paddypereira In hindsight, we lib snowflakes should have never let them get away with that shit. Now look where we are…..
@Aaron70, well, unfortunately, it's a process. Nothing to solve that will be instantaneous. The times when that happened are long gone and only now things can start to go progressively towards that direction.
@Paddypereira You’re delusional, things have been heading far right ever since they got away with those infractions. Look at SCOTUS ffs, nuttin but Buybull thumping’ flat earthers. Just this past week Louisiana passed a law requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in all its classrooms.
If you think “progress” is on the horizon, you’re not paying attention…..
@Aaron70, sorry, misunderstood. Things in Europe aren't much different now, many far right parties are gaining strength. I don't know how things will end up.
@Unity, no problem. Ended up working both ways.
No problem.
We need to go back to the original Pledge Of Allegiance...
Even better, how about everybody on the planet stop thinking artificial borders are important????!!!!
@annewimsey500 That would be more ideal, but I rather doubt a majority of the population would go for that though.
@annewimsey500 despite the fact that USA requires Hispanic labour for a substantial part of its economy & welfare you've had huge barriers created to physically prevent them entering the country. The efforts seem to have been very much in vain but perhaps that is just because of your hubristic belief in your abilities?
You couldnt even successfully deport the workers deported who died at Los Gatos back in the 1940's. Courtesy of "Traditional and Folkmusic" here's Woody Guthrie performing his famous song;
Yes, if only the white nationalists knew about it or cared. After their cult leader gets absolute immunity and his "supreme" court overrules another longstanding case and requires the Ten Commandments in school classrooms, none of history will matter.
If SCOTUS allows the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms I will be very surprised...and disturbed, disappointed, dejected,...and defiant.
@Flyingsaucesir Then you better prepare yourself. This Court has made a conscience decision to reverse much of the standing doctrine that the Christian Nationalists don’t like.
@Barnie2years Because telling other people how to think and what to believe is their thing. For them, rules are for other people
