If I remember correctly, the sparrow is the closest extant species directly related to the true dinosaur lineage (i.e. Dinosauria -Saurischia).

According to most Experts almost all birds we see today are descended from dinosaur ancestry, the Therapod type dinosaurs in particular.
Just maybe this little guy's fellow dinosaurs managed to survive through the K.T. Extinction event and went on to evolve into our modern birds.
