Super excited about the first 2018 sphinx to come to my sheet! This is a male lettered sphinx (Deidamia inscriptum). Won't be long before more, exciting, moths show up!

A beautiful Nicrophorus burying beetle that showed up at my sheet. Very common, but not every species is as nicely marked.

A little warmth, a little rain, and suddenly my drive home takes a whole lot longer! One of the 6 toads I moved off the roads tonight on my way home. (Thankfully, they're not very busy roads.)

Sunrise at the insect sheet. Lights are shut down and it's time to send the moths on their way.

My first wild Saturniid of 2018: a male Luna moth. I love these spring form Lunas with that pink edge to their wings. More colorful moths are on their way!

Dicromantispa Interrupta! What a name... Spotted this guy under the porch light on my studio the other night. First one I ever looked at closely, so I had to figure out what it was. Order Mantispidae. Looks vicious at 3 cm long

I found some ova in cold storage that I forgot I collected last year! Egg rings, on scrub oak, from the buck moth (Hemileuca maia) collected in September of 2017 and likely due to hatch later this month. And walkingstick (Diapheromera femorata) ...

A lovely female Eastern box turtle that I encountered in the woods while looking for birds. She's a welcome sight--the first land turtle I've seen this year.

Maybe not the sort of critters that this group thrives for; but among my favorites, nonetheless... A charming pair of barn swallows had been eyeing the overhang on my deck for the last week, and I decided to finally intervene: I provided them with a ...

Some of the cool insects that showed up last night. It was 70°F and very humid at 11pm--a great combination. These are: a huge species of cranefly, a male luna, a dotted prominent, Abbott's sphinx (which has very cool caterpillars!), and a ...

A new species of Saturniid for my sheet: Callosamia promethea, the Promethea moth. These are typically day fliers, but apparently females will come to lights.

I don't believe I have shared pics of my beautiful girl, Akasha. She is a Dumeril's Boa (Dwarf boa). Although she is girthy, she is only 6 ft long. I estimate her to weigh about 20 lbs. She is a ground boa and prefers a dryer habitat so there are no ...

I was spraying reptile tanks tonight and noticed Xena had a stuck on eye cap from her last shed. Of course that had to be taken care of. We hung out for awhile.

I was at the beach a few days ago and saw this little guy on my beach towel. It was about the size of a grain of rice. At first I thought it was a tick, but looking closer I'm thinking maybe a weevil.
