Got lucky with this one.. I was picking up some equipment and walked over to the edge of the drive. I started hearing a hissing sound. Being that I was around a bunch of pipelines, I thought maybe a pipe was leaking. Took me a second to realize that...

A big, beautiful, Promethea moth (Callosamia promethea) that showed up at my blacklights, tonight. She's full of eggs! I've got her in a cage overnight so I can collect some eggs before releasing her.

A gorgeous male polyphemus (on my hand) and an equally lovely female promethea that came to my blacklights last night. I'm taking both to a 2nd grade Bug Day program and then they will be set free.

Here's a fascinating insect I met today. A beautiful example of Batesian mimicry, this "bumble bee" is actually a robber fly in the genus, Laphria.

I just want to put this out there. I saw a post in a FB group by a woman who picked a wood turtle up from the middle of the road and took it back where it came from. That turtle will attempt to cross the road again.

I saw this big female box turtle crossing my parents' driveway earlier this week. Tonight, she is digging a nest alongside the driveway, a bit further up. If she lays eggs there I will place a screen top to keep the skunks and raccoons out.

My trip to Lowe's was a bust, but I helped this cutie across the road in the way back. First live wood turtle I've encountered this year.

I got to get in on the turtle fun today. Look at this big Mama who "darted" out in front of me. Made sure she got where she was going 😁.

I had some fun trying to photograph Alypia octomaculata, the 8 spotted forester moth. This is a striking, day-flying moth whose larvae feed on Vitaceae plants. Unfortunately, I didn't get a decent shot with the hindwings exposed so you can only see...

This was in 2013. I found this little guy in Deer Creek Canyon, between Santa Fe and Glorieta, NM. I believe it was my first skink spotting.

I hate articles like this one. They get folks all riled up and scared of anything that crawls or flies, without them bothering to learn anything about the creatures. Then comes pesticides everywhere ! Kill-kill-kill Damn.

Rita visited the pet store where my son works today. Sporting her sassy new harness. She no longer fits in the cat carrier, had to ride shotgun in the car.

Not sure we do birds here? (I'm a lot keener on other critters than I am on birds, funnily enough). I'd lost my sketchbook when I came back from New Zealand six months ago - and now it turned up! These are just quick sketches I did after seeing each ...
