All of our pets are strays that have shown up at our home - we were at 5 cats and 2 dogs. Our dear two year old yellow cat "Kato" disappeared last Thursday. It was not unusual for him to be gone a day and show up at breakfast time the next morning, but I had a bad feeling when 24 hours passed and he still had not shown up. Sunday morning I went out for the morning paper and saw him laying in the yard across the street. He wasn't there the evening before because I had been looking for him numerous times on Friday and Saturday.
I ran to him and he looked up at me and meowed as I approached. Both front legs were mangled and severely broken. A neighborhood dog had obviously gotten a hold of him.
Kato had no fear (as you can see from the photo), so he would have thought the dog was going to play with him and would have rolled onto his back.
We found a vet in a neighboring town that was open Sunday - took him there and all agreed that being put down was the best thing.
We have had to put down a lot of pets over the past 15 years, some just so old that they can no longer stand on their own, some with cancer or other progressive diseases, but for some reason this one has hit me very, very hard. I am having an incredibly difficult time finding a distraction. I just miss Kato so much.
I am so sorry for your loss. We just lost Rocky, so named as he would fight for the first teet. Rocky was 18, the last of his mother, sister and brother. Was really tough for Kate as she spent lots of time caring for him in the past two years. We now only have four. I told my wife when we first got married that she could have no more than 9 cats, I had to be in the top ten, did not care where in the top ten, knew it would be #10, but this was never discussed. Looking for another, will have to see what turns up. Someone always does. It is really bad that we have to outlive our pets.
I appreciate everyone's comments. I just hope this grief subsides. It's been 6 days since we put him down and I just feel such loss. Just went out in the dark rain and visited his grave.
Kato seemed to be one cool dude! Sorry for your loss. It is very tough!
Sorry for your loss..After all they are family.
So sad for Kato and you...
I too have a bold cat whom I fear for, especially around dogs and unkind humans. He tried to ‘play’ with a small dog today, but the dog ran away, lol. He has also befriended deer in my yard. Sigh. To make him an indoor cat would crush his soul. It’s never easy!

Posted by LaurenI thought this was an accurate representation of how we feel every time we remember our last cat, which happens often when my daughter and I laugh over our current cat's antics.
