CATS GET OLDER TOO

Cats love to climb. Giselle is no exception. If she could easily reach someplace, and even if she couldn’t, she got into places I never suspected she would get to. The kitchen counter was her favorite forbidden place. Discourage her as I might, she persisted. Eventually I gave up and conceded it to her for her food and water bowls.

Sad as it is to acknowledge, our cats get older too and are unable to do the things that came so naturally to them for so long. About a year ago, I noticed Giselle having trouble climbing up onto the kitchen counter. The bookshelf under the counter, which had been her access to the top, was still there as before. But she was no longer able to jump the three shelves like in the past.

It became necessary for me to make some changes, to adapt Giselle’s environment to comport with her new condition. So, I got a table and a small stool. That became her new food and water station. And much to my surprise, she accommodated the arrangement with little reluctance.

Outside on the balcony, I had to change a few things so she could still reach her favorite sunny spot.

Who says you can’t teach an old cat new tricks. Nobody I know.
