Sylvester and Tweetie?

A very long time ago I kept to zebra finches in a bamboo pagoda shaped cage sitting in a tray on top of a 4' high post. One day I came home from work and my ex told me to look at the bird cage. We divorced 35 years ago so it was long ago. When I looked all I could see were the motionless perched finches but I could hear a scratching sound. Then from underneath the cage a mouse popped its head out. Then another! Lifting the cage out of the tray revealed another dozen mice busy feeding on the seed wasted by the birds. The old Lab. didn't know which to go for as they all launched themselves off the 4' high tray and ran round her paws.
Incredible mountaineering skills of crossing an 8" wide expanse under the tray to then get to the edge and hoist up the 2½" vertical trayside!
I eventually, but not because of the mice but the cruelty to the birds, refused to ever again keep birds cages in anything less than a 20x20x10 metre aviary.... And I've never had the inclination to build one... to much varied wildlife around to need caged birds.
