I once had a cat left by a former roommate. She told me the cat had been traumatized by burflars who ransacked the house. She said his personality totally changed. he used to be very social, but after the burglary he would burrow under covers to sleep, and was always skittish.
My next roommate didnt' lie the cat, and after contacting my former roommate, she had me send the cat to her in Japan. I suspect it ended up with her mother. She told me that is what happens with most of her pets.
