Mark Twain was a cat lover and a Thinker. Being a cat lover was okay in his time ... but I wonder how did he keep his sanity, being a Thinker - the society he lived in was very oppressive.

Compared to today, yes. But he grew up in that Society so it wasn't unusual for him.
