Depressed. Saw a black cat run over on the way to work, pulled her off the street dead. Saw she was a nursing mother, looked around for her kittens, but couldn't see or hear them. I'm going to look again after work, I'm hoping by then that the little ones are hungry and screaming. I have a bottle and formula in the house, and Emily loves kittens and puppies, so she'll do snuggling and grooming and teach them how to be cats... If I can find them and get them to the vet tomorrow morning for testing.
Went out and searched yesterday morning and evening for the kittens. No luck. I hope mamma was around long enough for them to look after themselves enough to survive.
Did the dead cat have a microchip or collar. The kittens may be domestic and in a house somewhere.
No collar, went over her with gloves, didn't feel a microchip. The locals who recognized her from description said she was scared of people and pointed out her feeding station.
I found Mamma's feeding station near there and heard from the same lady that she usually hangs out with a grey cat. Couldn't find kittens, but I'll look again on Saturday. Hopefully grey and her combined litters if they're that good of friends. 5 people in the neighborhood know to be on the lookout.
My social abilities are just gone now...
Well, searched the area for a couple hours, talked to neighbors. No sign of the babies. Hungry kitties are usually noisy. Checking again in the morning.
If they're still alive, they will be nested somewhere, they likely won't be easy to find.
See if you can round up some volunteers to help.
Mother cats can cover multiple square miles when hunting, but start close to where you found her and go from there.
I hope you find them! I'm so sorry that happened to you glad you were there to pull her out of the road.
It doesn't really do anything, I just feel it's respectful, and, if it's someone's cat, helps her be more recognizable and gives them closure.
I'd be really sad too.
I once saw three on my way into work (a five minute ride) - called the DPW and they asked me "What the heck have you been up to?". They take care of animal remains and I'd been taught to call by my sensitive Mum.
First laugh I had that day.
I hope you have good luck finding the babies! Please update if you find them.
