Today I went to look at a boarding cattery to lodge my old girl when I have my knee replacement. I'm a little concerned about its name of "Catnap" which I know means a small sleep but has association with "kidnap".
I had never seen so many cats in 2 rooms. The rooms were subdivided into about 20 one metre square cages about 1.6 metres tall. I did a quick calculation and at % occupancy they would at maximum rate return about $000 p.a. Not a bad return for cleaning out and feeding 20 cats each day. The only downside to the cages being that they don't have access to external space, the cats let out of their cages merely having the run of the two rooms which were supplied with climbers and back scratchers.
There was a sense of peace and harmony within the rooms. I just hope they will be able to accomodate Puss when the time comes. Hopefully I will get a date next week.
Some cat boarding establishments do offer more space. You should check around a bit more. P
Rofl. This one has only existed for several years and given our low population density I'm amazed that they do exist. My previous location had about 4 but also had a population 6x in a quarter of the land mass.
@FrayedBear It sounds like you have chosen the best for your cat. I wish you a fast healing from your surgery and an easy return to mobility. Thank you for your reply.
@H2OLove Given the clutter I live with your latter desire will be helpful.
Hope the surgery and your recovery go well. Hope your kitty doesn't get too stressed out. Good luck!
Thank you from both of us.
Sorry about the upcoming surgery. Also that you need to find a board and care for puss - hopefully this is a good one.
I've been fortunate to have neighbors who can look in on my kitties at home for short days away.
Here there are also people who will come to your home to check on your cats and feed and play or sit with them. Don't know if you have that or not? Pet sitters. Easier on older kitties.
I've had one women offer but it is better all round for her to go into a cattery for a few days...that's if she is still alive when it happens - I don't know what the waiting period is yet.
@FrayedBear Yes I used a professional sitter when I was gone for a week once - years ago - but for a lengthy time I'd want a guarantee of someone being there and looking in.
@RavenCT The stress level is a two way street. I try to minimize hers by providing her with a worn sweatshirt to sleep on and hopefully I will be able to phone each day and hear how she is.
@FrayedBear Make sure you also wear that shirt - she'll appreciate the scent. I bet you know that.
@RavenCT Done it since the first time I kenneled her 15 years ago. I did similar with my daughter who I telephoned from the age of eighteen months to accustom her to the fact that she was not deserted and that we would be back together each Friday.
@FrayedBear Aw! Nice to hear.
Rough time coming up for both of you. I'm so sorry about that. My sister had a knee replacement done recently. I stayed with her for a bit afterwards. You're going to need some help initially. You're also going to need that machine that works the knee and the gadget that keeps it iced. You probably know that already. My sister was able to find her gear—local, used, but in good condition—for reasonable prices. Her normally aloof kitty hovered over her until he knew she was okay.
No I have not been told of these delights. My leg is now only held together by the one ligament running down the inside. Both cruciates have gone leaving bone on bone and the outside is crushed and missing the ligament. I can however still stand balancing on the leg alone for more than a minute.
Here's one of the gadgets I was talking about.
They also discuss the gadget that keeps it iced at the end of the video.
@vita thanks very much for that. No one has mentioned this before. I will enquire if they are available here in Australia. Makes good sense.
Good luck with this. Have you looked into other boarding facilities? That sounds like a LOT of cats in one place and could induce stressful behavior in your old gal. Let us know how it goes.
The only one locally.
@FrayedBear awww, sorry. Hope your surgery goes as planned and that you and Puss are reunited happily.
@poetdi56 thanks. As mentioned above I hope to minimize our stress levels. Another two months of limited movement after fifteen years of it will test my patience I'm sure but I'm sort of looking forward to being able to lengthily walk again. I saw a chap yesterday who started walking about 18 months ago and if he had not waved I would not have recognised his slim new figure.

Posted by LaurenI thought this was an accurate representation of how we feel every time we remember our last cat, which happens often when my daughter and I laugh over our current cat's antics.
