So, I wanna ask this group their opinions...a girl who ran away from the UK to join ISIS now wants to return home, and I recently saw where a woman from Alabama is in the same situation, ran away to join ISIS, and wants to come home now...I believe they are both currently in a Syrian refugee camp? What do you all think should happen in these cases?
I feel I'm pretty hardline about my thoughts...allow them both to return to their own countries, but to face treason charges, if relevant law exists, and probably execution. What are your thoughts in these cases???
I feel that while these two women should have to face consequences for their actions , and complete a de-radicalization / reintegration program , before being released into the public , I also feel that they were likely brainwashed into such an extreme cult . [freedomofmind.com] So some compassion might be in order . But yeah , if Daesh is not an oppressive , destructive cult , then I don't know what is .
Seems to me that there is a lot more people in those camps that lost everything because of ISIS that deserve to have a country more than members of ISIS do. Perhaps when all of the people they displaced have a home maybe then they can get a second chance.
@OwlInASack I don't believe that making them wait to return home while those they displaced find a home is showing a lack of compassion. It is showing compassion for those that deserve it. Even at 15 you know that there are consequences for your actions, if having to wait until others find is the consequence then so be it. I am not advocating they be imprisoned or mistreated just that they wait so how is that not showing compassion?
@OwlInASack I guess we have to agree to disagree
Men have defected to ISIS and have returned without jail time to help the FBI in their investigations of possible terrorist cells in the US. These two women as well as the hundreds of other former ISIS brides and warriors are amassed on the Syrian border waiting to be let back into their country of birth. And there is the problem.
The United States is claiming that the woman wanting to return to the US is not an American citizen, even though she was born on US soil, therefore should not be permitted to enter the country. Yet our Constitution gives her citizenship regardless of the nationality of her parents (both diplomats).
Allowing her to return could be an advantage to US anti-terrorism organizations such as the FBI and CIA. Allow her to do her jail time, but her cooperation would be vital to America’s defense.
They knew what they were doing so why not
But not execution leaving them there will just give them opportunity to continue their agenda
I oppose all execution, NOT on the grounds that it can't possibly be deserved; rather, because legal justice systems have proven countless times they are incapable of delivering justice justly.
Other than that, I completely agree with them being allowed home to face all appropriate charges. And yes, the age when lured into Isis needs to be taken into account.
With the American women it is pretty open and shut If you look in your passport it clearly states it will be revoked if you swear an alligence to a foreign power With the woman from the UK it gets a bit trickier because she does not actually have Bangladeshian citizenship so Technically it is against UK law not to let her in. In my opinion they should both be allowed to come home locked up at the border tride for treason and sent to jail
If allowed back, treason charges with possible execution sounds acceptable.
60 minutes had a guy on recently (last week?) who did pretty much the same thing...and he ended up back here....in prison. But he was such a good "cooperating witness" to what he saw and learned over there, that a judge ruled "time served" as enough...although they refused to let him go in to witness protection.
The English girl who went was 15 when she left the Uk. She has had three pregnancies in four years and two of her babies have died. She desperately doesn't want her recently born baby to die too, and is in a distressed and very confused state. She has a right to come back to the UK and I think she should be encouraged to do so. She should be given support and encouraged to get an education and qualifications to equip her for a life that will contribute something to society. She might even learn to question religion. When young people fall down, decent people don't kick them, they help them up.
Word
@Mitch07102 ???
@CeliaVL American slang for spot-on, you nailed it. I agree etc.
@Mitch07102 Two nations divided by a single language! (Or is it 'common language'? I must look it up.)
I don't know the circumstances and treason may be too harsh. It's not like they gave classified information to the Russians or anything. In the case of the American, she did provide material aid and support to an enemy of the US.
I agree to let her return, try her for any and all crimes she's suspected of, and if she's convicted, sentence her accordingly. There may be mitigating circumstances, but they should only be considered during sentencing if at all.
