This is infuriating but I expect no differently after sending a letter to my representative about HR-1. This is why primaries are vitally important so we can get these types of people out of office. Here's his response:

Dear Mr. Clay:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding H.R. 1, the "For The People Act." I appreciate you taking the time to share your views on this significant issue.

This legislation is comprised of unconstitutional and ill-advised policy mandates that turn America into a one-party system that favors the Democratic Party. H.R. 1 is a complex bill that would change the law on a number of provisions ranging from voter registration and elections to campaign finance, lobbying, and judicial ethics.

Specifically, H.R. 1 federalizes and micromanages elections by forcing states to enact mandatory voter registration, to allow all felons to vote, to extend periods of early voting, and to allow for same day registration which encourages voter fraud. It also limits states' ability to see who is registered to vote in multiple states and prohibits poll watchers from cooperating with election officials to inspect suspicious voter registrations. As if this isn't bad enough, H.R. 1 also infringes on the First Amendment by criminalizing protected political speech and certain kinds of electioneering.

Although Democrats are promoting H.R. 1 as a bill that would "strengthen our democracy and return political power to the people," it is actually an anti-democratic bill that would wreak havoc on our election system by manipulating election rules in favor of Democrats. This bill is an embarrassment for what our democracy stands for and I was proud to cast a "No" vote.
