28 April 2019 - Diet Diary - Just another Sunday, slept through the churching hour(s) which worked out for me since I stayed up until 4 AM. Need to get a little more control over that behavior. Kitchen work today, made a batch of banana oat "cupcakes" and roasted a bunch of baby carrots and asparagus. Tonight, I chopped the cauliflower and leftover roast chicken so I can make fried "rice" tomorrow.

Officially finished at 1140 tonight but then snuck a few peanuts so it is probably up 100 from that. I really need to swap out the peanuts for almonds or walnuts. At least they have redeeming qualities/health benefits. Not sure I can say that about peanuts. Not keeping to the lowest levels I've done but it appears to be adequately limited, I'm less than 3 pounds from my final goal. Weight will flutter around some but it seems to be staying below the 144 (the May 15 goal) consistently now. I fully expect to make it to my final goal by the date set, June 11, 2019. Well, MUST at least try to break that 4 AM habit, so off to bed. Night all!

Insomnia and irregular sleep patterns slow down your weight loss, I have read. I also find that srltaying up into the small hours encouraged me to snack. I find it is better to go to bed, even if I don't go to sleep until 4. I never eat in bed. I M getting excited about you reaching your goal soon. I think I shall celebrate on your behalf!

The staying up late does tax my snack limiting resolve. However, I can't go to bed too early or I won't sleep, plus the late night is when I usually do my internet stuff. If I take the kindle to bed, I end up staying up even later, another aspect of the problem. I need to start limiting Kindle access to the bedroom and I WILL be pushing the bedtime up to 2 AM. I set an alarm for 10AM as I don't often have any obligations before that and when I was getting to bed by 2 AM, that would give me up to 8 hours of sleep. I'm noticing the difference since my bedtime is slipping later and later. Over 4 decades, I have found that modifying my behavior to a bed at 10PM, up at 6AM or even midnight to 8 AM is not only very difficult, it also has a relapse rate even worse than weight loss.

When I worked, I did get up early as I had to in order to be at work. Unfortunately, I was still unable to go to bed and sleep before midnight. Although I didn't stay up as late as I do since retiring, I spent 30+ years sleep deprived. At least, since retiring, I have for the most part been able to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night, it is just on my own weird schedule.

We will have to have a little "party" when I reach my goal. Years ago, when the dog rescue group I am in was very active, I "threw" online "tea parties" a couple times. We just emailed back and forth as we each fixed our little cup of tea/coffee/cocoa and maybe a little snack then held a little virtual tea party. We could probably do it, you're 7 hours ahead of me so you might have to do morning & I do 1 AM or you could do evening and I could do early afternoon. We can talk about it when I'm closer to the finish line.
OK, it is now after 1 AM so I have to get ready so I can be in bed before 2, talk to you later.

An overweight friend recently recontacted claims that sleep apnea has a major influence on obesity. Have you come across this?

FrayedBear Level 9 Apr 29, 2019

I know there is a well established link between being overweight or obese and developing sleep apnea. Excess weight is pretty much accepted as a precipitating factor in apnea. While I have not seen much about apnea causing obesity, it would make sense that it does promote weight gain. I have read reports about sleep deprivation causing weight gain, for a number of reasons. It is highly likely that someone with apnea is going to get inadequate sleep on a regular basis, exacerbating an already existing weight problem.
The upside, people with sleep apnea who do take off weight may find the apnea improves or even goes away.
