I've just joined this group and already I'm feeling more positive. I was a fat baby, a chubby child, teenager, young adult, but with each of my three children I put on a stone (14 pounds) and never got it off. I have yo-yoed up and down all my life. Diets work but I quickly put the weight back on. Now I am 74, with replacement knees, one of which is causing some trouble, and an arthritic hip that is going to need replacing and I am not far off double my ideal weight. I am going to make a new effort with the support of this group and especially now that I have discovered HALT. Watch this space!

Celia, there are several of us here who have succeeded at this... and are still succeeding. We know YOU can do this because we did it and it surprised even US! Each person seems to have a variation of how it worked for them. For me, I stopped eating processed foods and any mammal products (except for Greek yogurt and no-fat cottage cheese, which are both). The rest, includes all veggies, fruits, spices, whole grains and chicken breast, exactly the way they leave the farm in their natural state. I also eat wild-caught ocean salmon. It starts with adding more and more veggies to your meals (no salt, no sugars, no oils) until the veggies are pretty much your whole plate. Use spices to dress them up. Try various mustards and vinegars for flavors. You can feel full, yet continue to lose weight when you focus on low-calorie veggies like squash, tomatoes and anything in the cabbage family. For liquids, I drink tea with lemon and stevia. I will help you to journal your eating and weight. Knowing what went in and what results you got will help you to rid your diet of the things that can defeat your efforts. For me, those were salad dressings, nuts, and bread... all now vastly reduced. I've lost 30% of my weight in 3-years and am closing in on my goal of 33% (80-pounds)when I'll be at my recommended healthy weight. By the way, it also helps YOU if you help others like I'm doing on this site. The more we talk about our success with others, the more successful we will be. YOU CAN DO THIS. Start today by adding more low-calorie veggies to your meals.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the suggestions and the encouragement. I shall make a real effort to lose a good few pounds before i see the orthopedic consultant in 6 weeks.

Well, if you are willing to work at it, you can change your eating habits and become thin. It isn't easy, but it is easier than dieting, which seem to never work in the long run.

Check out the documentary "Forks over Knives." It's free on youtube and some other places. It's also on Netflix if you have that. If you prefer to read, there are books by Dr. John A. MacDougall.

@EdEarl Thanks. i will look for it.

@CeliaVL I've lost 73 pounds, without being hungry, and could not have lost it if I were hungry. In addition to the info you get from Forks and MacDougall, you may like to try fasting for 19-20 hours a day, and only eat during one 4 or 5 hour period. I intend to do that one from now on, but getting into that habit will be a challenge for me. I've fasted for 20 a few times, and like the results. Now I'm working on making it my lifestyle.

I also exercise for at least 20 mins a day, nothing heavy just move for 20 minutes briskly, even if you do it from a chair.

Posted by JurneeI have to say, as an overweight karate instructor, this is the one patch that I was ok with never getting.

Posted by DotLewis7 March 2020 - Diet Diary - Been quiet around here lately. I've not been on vacation, just keeping a low profile and trying to stay on top of things. Are those things incompatible?
