Here are a couple of poems I wrote a couple years ago. Now that I think of it they're companion pieces. I believed in an afterlife for a long time, now I'm not sure, but I think these are interesting thoughts whether there is one or not. I think there are more alternatives than is/or not. Perhaps we could face our trips right now instead of later. What are your thoughts?
Tripping On Earth
After death,
The Christian dies
And the atheist lives—
The Christian becomes mystified
The atheist horrified
And together they face their trips.
Common Ground and Releasing Expectations
A Christian, an Atheist and love
In one Place
Resolution—
Healthy debate
Emergent view.
Our differences won’t abate!
But antagonism can
If we realize what’s common
And lose our insistence.
It's so hard "making it work" with a religious person. They believe in the power of prayer...we/ I don't. If you live your life based on evidence and reality - it becomes super-hard to "lose one's insistence".
I definitely think it's challenging as you say, but I'm not sure. I think it's virtuous to be intellectually honest as much as possible with "evidence and reality," but does this mean insisting that one has the superior view? From a Buddhist teacher I've been reading/studying from for a while he always talks about how nothing can be separated from the Whole, even religious people. They are part of reality too so we still need to reckon with them.
