I can be having an engaging conversation with another person, and suddenly a third person joins in. Now I feel like they're talking to each other and I'm out of the conversation. Does anyone else experience this?

True! But, I figure that the conversation changed course. No foul.

In my case I think it's because I don't have a very loud voice and people talk over me

@TheoryNumber3 I usually defer to the group unless I'm chairing the committee ?

Have had that happen, depending on the value of the conversation...have been known to counter rudness with a "fuck off",,...other times welcome the intrusion...

I like it. Now they can talk to each other and I don't have to think of anything to say

All the time...but it is partly my fault for backing away and not attempting to join in with them.

Well part of my problem is I don't talk very loud. I'll start to say something and someone else will start talking over me.

@TheoryNumber3 me too?

@TheoryNumber3 yeah, talking loudly works, taking up more space than you need, and repeating something someone said in a different way seems to work as well (tricks i learned when i became a manager), but sometimes i don't mind it because it means i can leave without the conversation without feeling like i'm "stuck" 🙂

All the time... No rules of engagement neither decent protocol, which to be fair, it would be hard (if not impossible) to enforce

On a related note, a few years ago I used to go out after work once in a while with a friend (she has ADHD); then another coworker was invited along, and another... soon we had 5-8 people showing up, and I stopped coming out. Now it's back to a small gathering of 2-3 people, but now I feel as if I have to "invite myself". I rarely do...

Yeah, I hate it when I make plans with one person and they invite others along. Totally changes the dynamic and renders me relatively mute

Unfortunately, yes. I don't have a good answer. My usual is to just sort of fade away.
