I imagine many of you out doing something similar. It is spring. Yea. Cleaning up the Yucca's, Snowballs ready to burst, the thyme needs harvested today, strawberries and blueberries looking good.
How is everyone's day going?
Those raised beds look very well made. Are you on hard clay like me?
You seem to have lots of space. I wonder if you've heard of this keyhole design for making vegetable gardening more accessible. My friend here is in his 70's but is nearly 7 feet tall and played center in college before working as an accountant. He has had all sorts of joint replacements and should probably shed a few pounds but this design allows him to go on growing some food. The rest of his garden is pretty showy but this part is for the kitchen.
No never seen that design.
My soil is not clay.. it is a mix of river sand rocks and dirt silt. I have about 200 ft of the South Yamhill river bank on a 1.12 acre lot in Oregon.
I quit having a lawn, it is dirt with mulch. And only have garden stuff going on. I put in the raised beds front and back yards and the garden has 3 beds. I like being able to sit on the sides to work the plants.
I dirt plant lots too in the main garden.
Fun stuff for the taste buds..
Good! We had a torrential downpour overnight and through much of our morning. Just got home from work and inspected the (garden) troops. Nothing washed away....although I had just scattered parsley seeds two days before and could not tell if they were to wash away. AND I picked my first carrots that actually smell ripe, fresh, aromatic. Can't wait to fix them for eating tonight! I hadn't grown carrots before. Never sure quite when to harvest and how long they can be left in the ground.
Carrot sizes per strain can be fatter skinny short long purple orange redish....they are usually sweetest .75" to 1.25" In diameter. Some places they over winter in the ground fairly well as long as the ground doesn't freeze hard. I planted them in the fall here before and ate some mid spring. So they can be in the goumd for some time, albeit some varieties may go bitter with age.
How well do those wooden raised gardens last ? I worry about them warping and rotting .
The dryer your climate, the better they last. I am in sauna-land and am hoping for 5 or 6 years from my 2x8s. Those will last much longer than 1in thick boards.
I used plain green fir construction grade 2x's instead of expensive redwoods. Here is why. Cost of coarse, but the longevity difference wasn't worth it. So this is the 3rd season for 5 front ones. I have one board to replace but it was not a good specimen. By using 3 inch stainless deck screws is a key for any of the other types of deck screws eventually rust causing rotting action.. when purchasing 2x stock do not take any that have soft grain redish or dark streaks with what look like little whitish spots(some sappyness) they will deteriorate faster. Lighter glossier colored tanish greys is what to use.
I hope this helps
i can take a few pictures of the reinforcing and construction if you want.
I am hauling well aged compost from the recycling depot to my garden and having fun enjoying the exercise and fresh air. Looks like you are also having fun.
I think the garden is actually having fun with me. Ugh...........Lol
How do you handle the cockroaches growing in composted soil ?
@Cast1es I don't have a problem with many bugs. When i make my compost i make sure it has lots of green cut grass, other greens, and green and dried leaves. that produces a lot of heat killing eggs and most unwanted seeds. Never seem to have much of problem.
I get my compost by the ton, the pile gets very hot, over 140F - never had a problem with bugs in the compost I get from recycling and the compost I do at home is over by the apple trees which are at 100 ft from the house. Although I have never had a problem with cockroaches from my own compost pile either, occasionally a raccoon will get in there and stir it up but that is usually only if a piece of meat gets in the pile.
