On one of our near daily walks, we saw a fair number of trilliums, and while they are not real showy, it is nice to see them. I was thinking of how tastes in wild flowers varied for me from what I plant in the garden--I mostly plant cuts. Then I realized there was another categories, escapees. Walking the Camino in June, I saw lots of things that I knew as garden flowers and herbs, that were no doubt escapees (I am guessing) from Roman times--they were advanced horticulturists but many of their varieties and methods were mostly lost during the dark ages--many only made it through from being used at monasteries. Some of the things that I saw and that I am trying to grow this year are field Poppies, Roman Chamomile, creeping thyme, scabiosa, yarrow, and digitalis. The one vegie we saw--in gardens--that I am trying to grow is tree collards--I bought 3 cuttings. So what I do not really know, is which of these were escaped Roman cultivars, and which were native plants, or native plants that perhaps the Romans brought in from elsewhere. It is a pretty remarkable herbal medicine chest making me think the Romans planted their road with useful medicinal plants, but that is just a guess.
