This is a giant yellow swallowtail caterpillar on common rue. I am looking forward to following the metamorphosis through to completion, especially because it will be my first giant yellow
This is a very convenient type of container to use, and thrift stores practically give them away. Note that it is turned upside down and placed on top of a dish. This makes it very easy to put fresh plants in and empty the waste. As with black Eastern swallowtails, make sure you place a piece of bark or branch into the container for the caterpillar to use to attach its chrysalis.
The photograph of the butterfly is one I took last year.
Seen a lot of butterflies around the fire bush and Mexican sunflowers.
A variety of different kinds of butterflies?
I planted my Mexican sunflowers very late, and they have not even bloomed yet. I love it when the goldfinches come to the sunflowers and just sit on the flower and peck away at the seeds
Beautiful!
Thank you, they are beautiful butterflies and I hope to see many more of them this summer.
