Are you going to separate the slips once they spout? Or just plat the whole thing? You will get a lot more sweet potatoes if you separated. If that’s what you are after. If it’s just for fun and want to see what happens just plant the whole thing. I ended up with a lot more slips then I needed so I planted whole potatoes that had a ton of slips on them right outside of my chicken pen. Figured they would vine inside the pen and the chickens and ducks could eat some of the leave. It’s very good for them. But I planted them to close they vines inside before they had enough roots to anchor them and the chickens pulled them in to the run and devoured them so my experiment failed.

I grew an avocado tree from a pit once. It was neat to watch it progress, and the process is similar to what you are doing. Avocado trees can't survive Illinois winters and it was not an attractive house plant, so it didn't last long.
