Rain, rain, rain. I amnot complaining but there are now special challenges: some creep-crawly is boring holes in my Savoy cabbage leaves. I know what to do about it: cover the stems at the soil level with raw sheepwool, of which I have plenty. Snails and slugs hate crawling over that, and the sheep dung acts as fertilizer when water (rain) hits it. I'll be out there today.
Harvested the first three black heirloom tomatoes. Also Early Girl ( without blight spots on it- thank you Epson Salt)
The green pepper crop will be tiny- just not enough sun in that spot. Onward and upward.
Diatomaceous earth is good to use around the house and garden for all types of pests. But it's not particularly good on damp soil. It's the first ingredient of sevin dust it makes up over 80% of 7. I've used it for years. A large bag is only about eight dollars and you can use it anyplace. If It gets wet it reactivates when it dries. You do need to be cautious when spreading it because it's such a fine powder. The mask from the drs offices are good to wear when using it.
I do not know about snails but know from experience that slugs are averse to the caffeine contained in coffee grounds. When I first moved here, it was not unusual to see slimy trails on the sidewalks in the morning, and it seemed like every large landscape rock had a slug under it. The type of slugs I am referring to is the large, fat, 6-inch variety.
I save my used coffee grounds and toss them in various places in the flowerbeds and have not seen a slug or evidence of a slug in years. Even if it doesn't cure the problem, mixing coffee grounds into your soil certainly can't hurt.
Yes, i collect coffee grounds and use themto enrich the acid loving plants. I'll try them around the cabbage.
@Spinliesel , I keep an empty coffee container sitting on the counter next to the pot. When I pull a used filter I put it in that one and put the lid on it. When it's full I spread them around plants or put them in the compost pile.
Do u add eggshells, too, to the tomatoes?
No, I dfo not. What for?
@Spinliesel To maintain the calcium/magnesium balance in the soil. Too much magnesium(epson salts) and not enough calcium(eggshells) inhibits plant grow.
@HeathenFarmer Ah, good point. I can throw a few magnesium capsules on their- take them myself for preventing muscle spasms. We don't use enough eggs here in Vegetarianville to make a differtence.
@Spinliesel You can also use limestone or dolomite as an alternative.
