This plant showed up unexpectedly in my completely dead back yard, it bloomed for the first time around this time last summer. A reddit post to r/whatisthisplant identified it as a desert bird of paradise, or Caesalpinia gilliesii. I find it quite beautiful so I collected the seeds in hopes of growing more of them. It appears to be a success as I have 3 seedlings that have sprouted so far!
They are very pretty whatever they are.
I agree!
I'd let them take the place over if they are self sowing and doing well.
It really surprised me when it popped up because the backyard doesn't get watered. It's been completely dead since before we moved in here. We're renters, so I am starting some to grow in large containers that I can take with when we have to move.
We have that one. It is very spectacular. You can train it into attractive small trees if it likes your conditions. Ours self-seeds quite widely.
It does produce a bounty of seeds! I have been collecting them from all over the yard to sprout for myself and also to share with others.
That is inspiring. I want to start cultivating some select local weeds for their decorative qualities. They ought to be easy to grow, for sure. Just have to frame them effectively and learn their growth/life cycles. I have one low, leafy dense crawling vine already I want to employ as a ground cover around a stepping stone path. Fun experiments. If they don't work, we are not out much money.
Good point about the low cost of trying! It should be fairly easy to find the information you need online. Best of luck with your experiments!
