I have a volunteer something that's in the compost bin. The vine looks like watermelon but the melons look like a cross between cantaloupe and melon. Smells like both. Is that even possible?
Anything is possible in a compost bin.
And some things come out completely good. Usually tomatoes.
Cross pollination will make the fruit blend both of the parents, then the seeds from that fruit will have the genes from both parents to pass along. Blame the bees.
I thought it was from mixing seeds in the compost. I've had a lot of odd volunteers but this one I couldn't place. Didn't know if it was possible for melons to cross.
Have you picked one yet?
Yes. Look like a watermelon and cantaloupe. Smells like them too. But yellow inside. I have yellow melon seeds scraped out there too. It's not edible but interesting. There are about six the size of small cantaloupes still.
@freeofgod what makes it inedible?
@JenBeberstein , mostly because they aren't ripe. And cantaloupe/ watermelon doesn't really taste good. Not unripe anyway.
Suspect so. No expert, but I do know that I have had a lot of crosses when I very grown different squash close together. Likele same with melons
