I need some expert advice. I received my order of the “ice cream banana plant”. I have potted it in a large pot with miracle grow potting soul. Does anyone have any suggestions to keep this plant growing and producing the fruit? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I want to thank everyone for their wonderful advice. In a couple of weeks I’ll be repotting in a much larger pot and moving outside for full sun all day. Updated picture attached.

Lots of sun. They are grown in full sun in Hawai'i. They are delicious-my favorite bananas. Please keep us posted.

Looks dark in that spot. If you do get a bigger pot, get rollers for it. You will be more likely to move it to better spots.

Be nice if you have a south facing door sized window for your lovely tree that belongs in tropics where it never freezes....if it does freeze the plant will turn brown and resprout from warmer roots and will not bear fruit for another 2 years

I agree with what @Glennlab said. Get a bigger pot and leave it in full sun as much as you can.
I knew a guy that removed his banana tree from the ground before freezing times and put it back once weather was safe. He was successful getting thing fruits. I haven't done that yet.

In the Houston area, I would cover mine with hay about 2 feet deep and pyramided to the stalk. I got bananas on a regular basis.

@Shouldbefishing I have 3 banana trees growing right now. I just haven't dug out during winter.
I am working on my fruit trees 😬
I just wish I could have a few more that unfortunately here is slightly too cold for it.

@Shouldbefishing, @glennlab how would you hold all together? I might do that.

@Zoohome I would just keep stacking it up, it packs down as it gets wet.

@Shouldbefishing I should have been clearer, you start muching with hay straw as the temperatures drop in the fall, keeping the pile at least 2 feet deep., trim anything dead, then once the weather breaks in the spring, uncover it and cut any dead leaves off the trunk. It's a grass so it will come back from the center of the plant.

First you need a larger pot. 10-20 gallons. They are biennial so it takes 2 years to get fruit. Keep the soil moist, full sun. They reproduce by putting out suckers, these can either be left on the trunk or transplanted for more plants. If it is not producing suckers within 6-9 months, it is not happy. When it flowers you will need to move it outdoors for pollination, wasps pollinate bananas, once the stalk has finished blooming and the bananas are roughly a uniform size, cut the stalk off and trim the plant level with the ground. The bananas will ripen if hung. If you leave them on the plant they will wither and become inedible.

Depends on the weather where you live . Saw a couple on here , who lived i Florida , seemed tto be doing a great job with them , but they're no longer posting here .

I live in Las Vegas NV, so will be growing the plant inside even though it is zoned for outdoors here. I just think it would be so lovely to pick bananas off a tree that’s inside your home.
