Could someone possibly assist in helping me identify this rose? The story is that the previous owner of the home brought/smuggled clippings somehow from a visit to the Normandy coast. I'm not sure the story is reliable at all, but the purple blooms have a lovely fragrance! Just starting to bloom here in Western PA.

Not Rosa rugosa?

I would agree with the Rosa gallica suggestion. It was an early development from the wild rose.

I can tell you that the leaves and what I can see of the bloom, look very much like an old fashioned rose (that's all I know to call it) that grows by my fence. It is a very dense bush, very thorny and the blooms are paler pink than these but an old or wild type rose bloom. That is my non-horticulturist take on it. There are some experts here who will probably know a lot about it.

Second rose kind of calls to mind the Tudor rose .
