What is the best way to determine a watermelons ripeness ?
I go by the yellow area and weight. The yellow area needs to be really yellow, not whitish. And it needs to be heavy for its size. It means there's a lot of juice. Hope this helps
Yes it does help Thanks . I've got over thirty I'd like to give away and just rather they be good melons .
Being new in Florida, 3 weeks, now, we went to a local garden store and bought several plants for the small front yard, a small common bromeliad, a salvia, a confetti lantana, and something else that i'd never encountered before. It has clusters of beautiful pink/red flowers, grows to about 2 feet tall, but I can not recall its name. i think it starts with oxa, or oxo, not oxalis. Anyone have an idea/ Of course, I could go back to the garden center and take a look.
Watermelons stay at that perfect stage for weeks at a time.
Canteloupe and Musk-melons seem to have a much narrower "window" of ripeness.
I've heard "thumping" on them....but to discover the effectiveness of this method requires a lot of trial and error.
With the thumping method I've wound up with a lot of over ripe mellons . Trial and error .
@Besalbub So what, exactly, is the sound of a barrel full of water being thumped on? LOL...take pics of your "experiment"!
