Tree roots are alot stronger than veggie roots. Been using these since 2011 with no cracks. Except from freezes!
Maybe the tomato plants were starving for some more moisture. Why not just water them?

My thought exactly. The cling of desperate thirst.
Watering occurs my means of the 'osmotic potential'. Keeping water at the root zone instead of losing it through deep percolation.
