Changes... I'm going to unpot my rose that I got this summer and put it in the ground. It is doing only "okay" but not really thriving or growing. The one blossom it had when I got it is the only one all summer. 😟

I've decided to plant it in the spot nearer the door and alter the patio blocks to make room. Anyone else have issues with roses in large pots? The pot size is much bigger than it needed so I know it's not crowded.

I grew roses exclusively in pots for over 30 years, until just last year when I was finally able to buy a home. I can tell you that pots usual pose little if any challenge for roses at least for the first couple years. As they mature it gets trickier to keep them happy. I suspect your problem is most likely a poor specimen, unless it is inadequate drainage, terrible soil, or inadequate sun. Roses on their own roots seem the best suited for life in a pot. Grafted on fortuniana does just fine, though in ground it grows much larger eventually. But Dr Huey-budded roses, the standard in Californua, and therefore, in Lowe's and Home Depots around the nation. Dr. Huey has thick main roots and really wants to spread out. Confine it in a modest pot, and it will sulk. Consider taking a cutting from Dr Huey budded roses if you want long-term potted life for them.
