Hello All,
I need some advice on my tomato plants. They are looking thin, pale and the leaves are curling on themselves a bit. I am in NM, so think I am watering enough, but more often? I just water them once in the morning. They are in pots on my patio in potting soil (with fertilizer included in bag)since the Spring. Anyone know what is wrong with them? Hoping this is a common problem and a solution comes up quickly. TIA.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.According to some one is to let the foliage look ragged as then all of the strength & focus is on making seed which is the tomato fruit. So the fruit should look magnificent tho the rest of the plant is stressed. I did not think one could overwater tomatoes as long as the drainage is good. Light will affect them as the rush to reproduce thru seed is triggered by the autumnal equinox & summer solstice.

do they have mulch on the soil? Maybe overwatered.Up here in colorado,i have had to water much less since i put on a heavy bed of mulch in the spring..I doubt the need water every morning.Maybe try watering at a later time.Give the plants a chance to dry out some and then they can recoup in cooler temps.Just sayin...good luck

Thanks! I am always thinking they are too dry so I could be overwatering.
@Susan4birds I always wait til they droop a bit. Do you feed them and if I may ask,what do ya use?
You might want to add a water loving bead to the garden soil next time - this article explains them: [thegrownetwork.com]
I've never gardened in your environment so I'm not positive that's the issue.
It could also be a nutritent your lacking as they've been growing since Spring. When we grew tomatoes we added a Miracle Grow mix to the watering a few times a season to add nutrients.
A local nursery might be best equipped to offer advice.

Thanks! I am in a small town and no nurseries here, that I know of at least.
Look closely at the leaves, maybe use a magnifying glass to see if their are tiny bugs, spider mites, on the plants.

do the roots have enough space to grow..and lots of water are needed in a container... try watering twice a day

Thanks! I was thinking larger pots might help.
are the tips slightly yellow? that can be a sign of moisture (not enough) stress. How are your nighttime temps running? You should be going into second season about now.

Leaves are not yellow, just pale. Nighttime
temps are in the mid 60s.
@Susan4birds sounds like you need iron and manganese, they work for plants to strengthen the chloroplasts. Epsom salt, pots should be 5-10 gallons for proper root growth, the smaller the pot, the more often you need to add minerals and water and the easier it is to get a chemical imbalance.

@Susan4birds I used to be guilty of too small pots, now I buy muck buckets and totes, they're cheaper than pots, and normally easier to move around to take advantage of sun or shade depending on the season.
