Interesting comments, so far. I've .68 acres of a lot in a suburb in a county (outside city jurisdiction). My small front yard, house, and drive are about 1/3 of this. I've a privacy fence around the other 2/3 (backyard). Linda & I play at food gardening. But if we turned all the viable ground into a "truck garden".... I wonder what could be produced.

A lot of the urban gardeners and the organic gardeners get orders from local restaurants and families. They make contracts with them to deliver certain products when available and so you have income assured for you. They have first priority to the harvests.

At one time I put in some raised beds in my urban house. I discovered a book ("Square Foot Gardening" ) and now it seems to be a group. [squarefootgardening.org]
