I only feed the birds in the winter and that with suet. Birds need fat to help them through the winter. I also built a roosting box. [thespruce.com] Birds enter from the bottom and there are several perches inside. I open it periodically for cleaning. Maybe I should build a few more.

Never tried a roosting box, it sounds very worth while, I think that I will give it a go, thanks for the hint.

@Fernapple And I should build another. Taking another look at my picture I noted the row of Poplar trees in the background. I believe they're called candlestick Poplars as the top leaves are the last to drop so they look like lit candles.

I suggest , if you have indoor/outdoor cats , that you not set out bird food . The cats will hunt them and bring their catch home to you .
