Gardening in Alaska is serious and it is all about timing... we have a very small window of time to get our vegetable gardens planted and growing - not too early or a late frost will destroy all of your work ...and not too late or you may lose in the fall with an early frost before everything is ready to harvest. A greenhouse is really necessary for warm climate crops like tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant... but we also have 20 hours of daylight in June where I live - so many veggies grow extremely fast and some grow extremely large! It is also nice to start seeds indoors when there is still a foot of snow covering your garden to break up the cabin fever after a long winter indoors... I have 2 large shelf racks set up in my living room with grow lights for starting vegetables indoors. You can read about the details on my personal garden blog.
That's a fantastic rig you have there Mr. FrostyJim. I will check out your blog as well.
Wow! Pretty much opposite climate from me. You might enjoy this YouTube interview with a gardening author from Nova Scotia. She writes about year round gardening and sings the praises of greenhouses and cold frames. If a greenhouse is prohibitively expensive, you can achieve a lot with a few cold frames, which can be built very cheaply with a few salvaged materials or even some heavy grade clear plastic stapled to a simple wood frame and set on a few bales of hay for insulation.
