We are having an icestorm in the next two day, so no gardening. Does anyone here grow their own orchids, especially Vanilla Orchids? How difficult and expensive is it? I do not have a greenhouse, but a very sunny backporch. I was posting about the Vanilla bean shortage on Food Glorious Food, and it occured to me that I am a pretty good gardener, but never treid orchids,. Any advice>
I grow orchids indoors year round. With a little special treatment, orchids can withstand a variety of light and humidity levels. Most epiphytic varieties should be flushed and drained with each watering, rather than spot watered like other houseplants in soil.
Different orchids have different light and watering needs. Fertilizing rule of thumb is WEEKLY, WEAKLY. Phaelanopsis is easier to care for than most others and is good for beginners.
I know they're very finicky... I kept one alive for four years in my bathroom, but never got it to flower. Now I want to look in to how to raise them properly and produce vanilla bean!
Please share what you find. My only contact with the orchid growing society here in upstate new York dies a few years ago. I learn a lot from boosk, google, website, but it's hard to ask questions and get answers right away.
I haven't a clue but will be interested to read other's advices.
