A couple of weeks ago I did a post with two pictures of a house finch nest in a birdhouse hanging from the roof of our covered front porch. At the time, there were four eggs. Now I am proud to say we have quadruplets.
A picture of a male house finch is also attached. The females look a little bit like a a washed out house sparrow and are about the same size. They range all across the continental US. If you wish to attract them, use Nyger or thistle in feeders that are made for them. They like to have their feeders placed away from other bird feeders. An advantage to these two types of seeds is that squirrels do not like them and will leave them alone.
Awwww! We have yellow ones here.
I have a special place in my heart for goldfinches. My mother, who last August died at the age of 100, always called goldfinches canaries. I never corrected her about it. In fact, years ago many people believed that the little yellow birds they saw in their yards were canaries that escaped from their cages and adapted to the wild.
One of the things I love about goldfinches is that if you plant sunflowers, they will sit on top of the flowers and peck the seeds out. I usually plant some next to my porch right next to that bird cage that the house finches nest in, then beginning in about July, can sit on the front porch and watch them.
@PappyOnWings my mom used to put out thistle seed for them, but it was super messy. I should encourage her to do that out in the tortoise enclosures because it wouldn't matter out there.
@SurvivorSteph Thistle seed also grows thistles, whether you like them or not.. I am very partial to thistles, love the beautiful lue flowerheads.
@Spinliesel that's why she stopped putting the seeds in her front lawn. ?
@PappyOnWings Nice! when I lived in CA a few years ago we hung a niger feeder in front of our kitchen window and almost instantly had a flock of goldfinches visiting! I loved to see them , they're so gorgeous.
@Spinliesel Scottish National flower.
