Straw bale Gardebning

Four of the 6 straw bales are planted, with 12 tomato plants and 12 pepper plants. It was very work creating the little planting holes to put in the growing mix and the plantlet. Brendan was better at it than I, but I insisted on doing at least the pepper myself. Tomorrow, we are planting the cucumbers and the parsley in between. Cannot take any photos right now; my arms are shaking from the effort of digging in the straw. Found many ladybugs already and one very pretty toad, all good signs. All the plants that need support right now will get knitting needle supports. I don't knit with straight needles any more.
Brendan wants to plant potatoes.

My hands are swollen from the effort of making the indentations in the straw. Brendan did the tomatoes; I did the peppers. I can already see an improvement for next year loosen the bale a bit. These bales came from adairy farm. The twine was tightened to maximum capacity to allow the baleas to be stored in the least amount of spece. I think I will remove every other twine to loosen it up. We also soaked each bale with a small amount of fish emulsion as the final fertilizer. Brendan is not a fan of that smell. I love it. The smell of home.

@Spinliesel the aroma allways refreshes memory I often think more that sight.

are you saying you have 12 tomato and pepper plants per bale?I know I just read it wrong but wanted to be sure ! Where are you at that you don't have to worry about deer eating both the plants and the hay?

There are 6 plants per bale, tomatoes and peppers. We have no deer, here in our little hamlet. . We are sort of landlocked by a creek and a pond and a railroad track. We have lots of little critters but no deer. The hay bales are soaked in fertilizer and in fish emulsion. Maybe penguins would be a problem, but have never seen any .

@Spinliesel ...you win!the penguin comment is one of my faves. They can be pesky bastards
