I had this explained to me once.
The image in a mirror doesn't reverse left-right or up down. Your head is still opposite the head of the reflection and your toes are still opposite the does of the refection. Just as the hand wearing your watch or wedding ring is still opposite it's counterpart in the mirror.
What is reversed is front to back.
When we try to reconcile that in our minds we're biased toward rotating the image vertically so that it appears left and right are reverse but we could just as easily rotate the image horizontally an imagine that left and right matched but the image was on its head.
I think the person who explained it to me might have done better job than I've just done but hopefully your get the gist.
